Firstly, tourism is a localised issue and while a drop of in numbers may not mean much in Nicosia, in Pafos it represents a huge blow to hoteliers/car rental companies/tavernas etc.

Secondly, fewer tourists mean fewer 'foreigners' buying property and thus the developer/estate agent/furniture/electrical goods sectors are damaged. Again, this is very significant for Pafos, because tourism and property have become the lifeblood of the area over the last five years.

When all these people are thrown out of work - then every shop and service supplier is hit because, people have no money.

So, laugh away in Nicosia, but spare a thought for those enduring real suffering in other parts of Cyprus. If you think that Cyprus and, more importantly, Cypriots are not being affected badly by what is happening, walk carefully - or you may fall over with your eyes shut.

Well, it's time you Paphians got a real job ain't it?

Tourism occupies a dominant position in the economy of Cyprus.[1]
· In 2006 it was expected to contribute 10.7% of GDP.
· in real terms it generated CYP£2,598.2 mn (US$5,445.0 mn) (annual-2006).
· total employment was estimated at 113,000 jobs (29.7% of total employment = 1 in every 3.4 jobs).

GDP US$21.382 Billion (As of 2007)

Source Wikepedia

I have highlighted the earnings for GDP and tourist income for different years (2006 and 2007) but even on these figure tourism is 25% of GDP and this figure will be higher if shown as a percentage of overseas earnings

If Cyprus wants to attract better tourists it needs better resorts first.

It’s very strange that Milti and Jerry decided to quote the Wiki with its 2006 figures and erroneous information that tourism has the number 1 income earning spot in Cyprus, when I posted the most reliable and up to date source yesterday, namely the Statistical Service of Cyprus (CYSTAT) where we found…

Year..........Arrivals..........Revenue......Spend p/person
-------------------------------------------------------------------
2006........2,400,924.......1,755.3..........€731
2007........2,416,081…....1,858.1…......€769
2008........2,403,750…....1,792.8..........€745

http://www.mof.gov.cy/mof/cystat/statis ... t&sub=2&e=

If Tourism amounts to only 10-12% of the country's GDP, then how can it possibly be the #1 income earner?

The idiot also concluded that because Tourism generated US$5,445.0 mn out of US$21.382 Billion GDP then tourism acoounted for 25% of GDP...

And at the same time the wiki specifically stated that Tourism accounted for 10.7% of GDP and to day it only accounts for 7%.

No wonder he sells pots and pans.

I hope he has a good accountant, because he has no idea about economics...

We want tourists to come to Cyprus.

We just don't want the stinking Brits that vomit on our sidewalks.

Slightly changing your tune here now. No-one likes to see any nation vomit anywhere in public, thats' disgusting!

No not at all.

Tourism offers absolutely nothing to our highly educated and driven youth.

Where did it all go wrong with you mate because from where I'm you sound like a proper Plonker !!

"Britain has been the caused all of our troubles as you well know."

Well, thats is a relief; I have been thinking all along that those wretched Turks had been a bit of a nuisance - I can stop boycotting Kebabs now...

Nice to know and rather ..... encouraging that our President had the honour of welcoming the right honourable President of none other than Namibia , a staunch supporter of the Cypriot cause , now we have Cuba on our side , Libya , Iran , Hamas and Hezbollah we fear no one , to hell with the USA and Britain , long live Namibia Libya and all the other ... influential friends of Cyprus. I wonder how many Namibian , Cuban Palestinian , Iranian tourists we may attract in the future when the Brits have gone !! Maybe we could offer them free two week holidays with spending money !!!!"
Of course as you may have gathered I'm merely taking the piss , who the hell is Namibia , Cuba , Hamas and the rest !!!

The figures quoted by me are from the Wiki site, take it up with them. You must not confuse GDP with overseas earnings/income.

The figures below show how important tourism is to the income gained from overseas to Cyprus. (source Nationmaster 2004) Can't find any more up to date figures.

International tourism, receipts > % of total exports 32.95 %
International tourism, receipts > current US$ (per $ GDP) 165.387 $ per $1,000 of GDP
International tourism, receipts > current US$ (per capita) 3,489.047 $ per capita

Wasting your time Jerry the kid is emotionally disturbed ! In other words a 100% Plonker !!
I mentioned it a few times in the past that as a fully qualified ACCA as well as a business man , I find it extremely amusing when naive individuals disregard the importance of our biggest financial contributor which is tourism .
I haven't got either the time or the inclination to do a complete research , it would be a futile exercise any way, the fools would still not accept .
Any Cypriot who thinks that tourism isn't the backbone of our economy -until the oil is flowing - must need their head examined unless of course as in the case of IGAROS they are totaly stupid !!

The problem with Cyprus tourism is that Cypriots built places like Ayia Napa that then complain because of the types it attracts. Having attracted a large proportion of lower income tourists they then try and rip them off.

It does not have to be like that. I stayed in Lordos Beach Hotel last year, no yobos, no vomiting lager louts jusy ordinary people with families enjoying Cyprus. I have also stayed in a small family run hotel just off Phinikoudes, it was rubbish and not that much cheaper than Lordos Beach. The CTO needs to get its act together and enforce higher standards.

I wish contributors to this thread would realise there can be a huge difference between GDP and income from overseas. One figure says it all for me, 30% of workforce employed in tourism
