"We couldn't lower our prices even if we wanted to"

What a laugh!

£46.00 English Pounds for 5 coffees and 5 cakes!

Take the money off the tourists while you can because next year there will be even fewer.

Bloody Brilliant! :D

Here we go ... from today's Financial Mirror ....

As regards the meeting with Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Antonis Paschalides, Verheugen said that they discussed a lot of issues, and mainly the issue of tourism, which is the most important industry in Cyprus with huge potentials.

Noting that Cyprus has to confront with countries such as Egypt, Turkey, Croatia, Montenegro, as regards tourism, Verheugen said that the country should upgrade its quality.

“The competition is really strong and that of course requires for Cyprus to develop the product in a way that is based on sustainability and quality”, he said and concluded:

“We totally agree that the future of tourism here in this country is definitely by improving the quality and making Cyprus a place for tourists who have higher ambitions than the others”.

.... keeping out the riff-raff cheapskates and going for the quality end, with high ambitions ... i.e. a euphemism for Cypus as a more expensive tourist destination! 8) 8) 8)

Here are some figures for you to chew on:-

Tourism occupies a dominant position in the economy of Cyprus.[1]
· In 2006 it was expected to contribute 10.7% of GDP.
· in real terms it generated CYP£2,598.2 mn (US$5,445.0 mn) (annual-2006).
· total employment was estimated at 113,000 jobs (29.7% of total employment = 1 in every 3.4 jobs).

GDP US$21.382 Billion (As of 2007)

Source Wikepedia

I have highlighted the earnings for GDP and tourist income for different years (2006 and 2007) but even on these figure tourism is 25% of GDP and this figure will be higher if shown as a percentage of overseas earnings

If Cyprus wants to attract better tourists it needs better resorts first.

There are two issues, away from the immediate downturn tourism figures;

Firstly, tourism is a localised issue and while a drop of in numbers may not mean much in Nicosia, in Pafos it represents a huge blow to hoteliers/car rental companies/tavernas etc.

Secondly, fewer tourists mean fewer 'foreigners' buying property and thus the developer/estate agent/furniture/electrical goods sectors are damaged. Again, this is very significant for Pafos, because tourism and property have become the lifeblood of the area over the last five years.

When all these people are thrown out of work - then every shop and service supplier is hit because, people have no money.

So, laugh away in Nicosia, but spare a thought for those enduring real suffering in other parts of Cyprus. If you think that Cyprus and, more importantly, Cypriots are not being affected badly by what is happening, walk carefully - or you may fall over with your eyes shut.

If things don't change then Cyprus will get a very bad name for being an expensive resort and people will travel elsewhere.

Do owners of tourist related businesses not realise that people have now become very careful with their money and we are in a recession. Tourism numbers have been on a decline for the past few years now and if it continues to slide then the shit will hit the fan.

Wake up and smell the cheese.

Do you think that these businesses/authorities will do anything about it?

I also think that some of the prices that Cyprus Airways charge are very unrealistic too.

O NOUROS TO HORKATI EN OPOS TOU SHILLOU !!!
Without tourists , especially Brits , our economy will grind into a halt .
As Lana pointed out its not just hotels bars and restaurants but the knock on affect will damage most other businesses.
Lets improve our facilities , keep a lid on price increases and lets tell the Paphos taxi drivers to stop ripping people off !

Rip off taxi fares - too bloody right. Why isnt there a bus route going into Paphos town and to Limassol??

For us to get a taxi to Pissouri from the airport, then a taxi back to the airport, is more expensive than hiring a car for a week - bloody crazy!
