One very sad impact in the decline in tourism/property buying in Pafos is a massive increase in unemployment, which has increased by 200%!! in the last twelve months. This excludes of course, all the 'illegals' who have also lost their jobs over this period.

I was talking to a friend, the owner of a very long standing and respected Cypriot Estate Agency here, this morning, and the best he could look forward to over the next couple of years was 'survival'.

It's all very sad for the taverna/restaurant owners too etc.

Hi Lana

One thing which has worked in the UK is buffet style restaurants. There are quite a few over here now. From Indian, Chinese to Mongolian restaurants. You pay around £10 for your meal and you can eat as much as you like.

Why don't more restaurants in Cyprus offer this?

A number of ethnic restauarants are offering this, particularly on Sundays.

One of the major problems for tavernas/restauarants now is the growing popularity of all inclusive Hotel vacations. People, suffering from Sterling£ weakness now know in advance, roughly how much their holiday will cost them.

Many bar/restauarnt owners are foolish to themsleves, charging €4 or more per pint; tourists and locals alike never return. With tourism down, thyey need the repeat business of locals...

One word Lana...greed!

No-one accepts paying €4 or more a pint of local brew. Owners who charge this deserve what is coming to them in my eyes. They either need to reduce their prices or try a different trade

I agree, €51.50 (GB£ 46.00) for five coffees and five cakes is pure profiteering and I hope all these shameful places are named and shamed by the locals and the tourists.

Get rich quick merchants who with any luck might feel the cold draught of the economic downturn, loss of earnings and little or no profit next year.

Just come back on Sunday after two weeks in Paphos and, even baring in mind the drop in value of sterling, we were FLABERGHASTED at how expensive it is. Really really staggered.

Given the price and increase in urbanisation it's getting very hard to recommend it anymore :(
