NATO to Investigate as Troops Kill Three Civilians in Helmand

NATO says it is “looking into” the circumstances through which its troops accidentally killed three civilians and wounded another during “combat operations” in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province.

NATO’s report on the incident provided no additional details of how the deaths happened, but it appears to have happened in the Sangin District, which US troops recent took control of after years under British occupation.

Sergeant Accused of Killing Afghan Civilians Faces Hearing

A lawyer for the Army staff sergeant accused of being the ringleader in the killings of three Afghan civilians tried to cast doubt on the charges Tuesday at a hearing that will determine whether the soldier faces a court-martial.

The staff sergeant, Calvin R. Gibbs, 25, of Billings, Mont., is charged with three counts of premeditated murder in the killings, which occurred near Kandahar in January, February and May. He and four other soldiers are accused of killing civilians for sport, then planting weapons near them to make it appear that they had died in combat. Some of the soldiers are accused of collecting body parts from Afghan corpses and of posing with the dead for photographs.

US troops 'goaded' to kill

THE accused ringleader of what authorities say was a rogue US army platoon in Afghanistan goaded troops into killing innocent Afghan civilians.

He also threatened to kill a soldier if he told anyone about drug use in the platoon, an army investigator testified yesterday.

Staff Sergeant Calvin Gibbs, facing three counts of murder in one of the most serious war crimes cases of the US war in Afghanistan, produced a collection of severed fingers taken from Afghan corpses and, along with co-defendant Corporal Jeremy Morlock, used them to intimidate Private Justin Stoner, who already had been stomped on and beaten by half a dozen members of his unit, army investigator Anderson Wagner said his interviews revealed.

US Military Destroying Hundreds of Civilian Homes in Kandahar

The Obama Administration made much of the Kandahar offensive’s success hinging on winning hearts and minds to the side of the occupation forces. As usual this goal is falling by the waysde as the military actually arrives on the scene, as civilians in the Zhari District are up in arms at the military’s actions.

The district has been seen as a key target for the offensive, but locals are complaining that the US military, having occupied the district with little resistance, has proceded to bulldoze homes and farm fields en masse, with hundreds of homes destroyed and a large number of people rendered homeless.

Major spy scandal as five Scandinavian governments catch the U.S. watching their citizens

America has been accused of illegally spying on hundreds of people in Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Iceland.

Officials in the five countries expressed their unhappiness at surveillance tactics that were conducted without the knowledge of the individual nations' governments.

America claims officials informed the Norwegian government about the operation which was aimed at terror suspects.

The Cowardice of America at War

We were occupying their country—and they hate us. I was not crying for Meari, though God knows, he and his family deserve our tears. I was crying for my country, for the cowardice of our leaders who continue to send the same brave young men out again and again to die rather than admit they have no chance as strangers in a strange land.

They, the cowards in Washington, know what they are doing. If they don’t, they can read the reports of the University of Chicago Project on Security and Terrorism, which analyzed each of more than 2,200 suicide attacks around the world since 1980. Their conclusion, obvious if you read history, is that extremist religion is not the motivation for such terrorism. The reason, above all, is military occupation of other countries.

The Specter of Defeat Haunts Lisbon

The defeat of Soviet armies in Afghanistan in 1989 began the collapse of the Soviet Empire. Could the same fate be in store for the American Raj?

Obama uses national security as a cover for violating people’s rights.

During his presidential campaign, Barack Obama criticized the Bush administration for its excessive secrecy, noting that it had “invoked a legal tool known as the ‘state secrets’ privilege more than any other previous administration to get cases thrown out of civil court.” Obama also promised to end “extraordinary rendition,” a practice through which “we outsource our torture to other countries.”

In September, however, the Obama administration used the state secrets privilege to block a lawsuit by five former captives who say they were tortured as a result of extraordinary rendition. Although candidate Obama surely would have been outraged, President Obama is for some reason less concerned about abuses of executive power.
