Torture, killing, children shot – and how the US tried to keep it all quiet

The largest leak in history reveals the true extent of the bloodshed unleashed by the decision to go to war in Iraq – and adds at least 15,000 to its death toll

So now we begin to know the full extent of what Tony Blair called the blood price.

A detainee tortured with live electrical wires here, children shot by US troops at a checkpoint there, insurgents using children to carry out suicide bombings somewhere else; on and on, through 391,832 documents. At the Pentagon, these messages were the day-to-day commonplaces of staff inboxes; for Iraqis, they detail, in the emotionless jargon of the US military, nothing less than the hacking open of a nation's veins.

Chemical Weapons, Iranian Agents and Massive Death Tolls Exposed in WikiLeaks’ Iraq Docs

No one would accuse WikiLeaks of being pro-war. Not when the transparency group titled its single most famous leak “Collateral Murder.” Not when its founder, Julian Assange, said that its trove of reports from the Afghan conflict suggested evidence for thousands of American “war crimes.”

UN: WikiLeaks files should prompt Iraq abuse probe

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said the files released by whistleblower website WikiLeaks indicated U.S. authorities knew about widespread torture and ill-treatment of detainees by Iraqi forces, yet transferred thousands to Iraqi custody between early 2009 and July 2010.

"The files also allegedly include information on many undisclosed instances in which U.S. forces killed civilians at checkpoints and during operations," Pillay said in a statement.

UN votes against US embargo on Cuba for 19th year

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 26 (Reuters) - The U.N. General Assembly voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to urge the United States to lift a half century-old economic embargo against Cuba, making its now ritual call despite some easing of U.S. ties toward the communist-run island.

The assembly passed a non-binding resolution -- with 187 votes in favor, two against and three abstentions -- for the 19th consecutive year, reflecting the world's disapproval of Washington's long-standing effort to isolate Havana.

E.U. rules let Iran import, export oil, creating possible split from U.S. policy

The United States and Europe have worked cooperatively on Iran policy since President Obama took office, but a small crack might have begun to open over sanctions that are beginning to pinch ordinary Iranians.

The European Union issued regulations this week that went well beyond a U.N. Security Council resolution passed in June, outlining tough restrictions on the sale of equipment and technology to the Iranian oil and gas industry, as well as on investment in those sectors. But the regulations - unlike legislation passed by the U.S. Congress - allow for the import and export of oil and gas to the Islamic republic.
