War Crimes Case Raises Leadership Questions

WASHINGTON -- Despite allegations that members of a rogue Stryker platoon engaged in a monthslong drug and murder spree while stationed at a small forward base in Afghanistan, no leaders or officers responsible for the platoon have been charged or disciplined in the case and the Army will not confirm whether any are under investigation.

In what is developing as the worst American war crimes case to emerge from the 9-year-old Afghan war, five Soldiers of the 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team are facing potential courts-martial on various charges that they killed three unarmed Afghan civilians for sport between January and May this year in the Maiwand District near Kandahar City.

The case against NATO

What once was a defensive alliance dedicated to European security now has little to do with either defense or Europe

The goal of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization used to be, as its first secretary general, Lord Ismay, phrased it, "to keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down." Today, the only reason to keep NATO going seems to be to give Americans a reason to be "in" Europe when there is no longer any need for American military involvement in European affairs.

Freed Guantanamo detainee sues U.S. military over alleged torture

"A Syrian man released from the prison at Guantanamo Bay last year sued the U.S. military Wednesday, saying that he was the victim of a "Kafkaesque nightmare" in which he was tortured by al-Qaeda after being accused of being U.S. spy, liberated, then tortured again by the Americans, who held him for seven more years by mistake. Obama Will End the War or Lose the Elections

The counterproductive, unnecessary, and damaging Afghanistan war is destroying one of the most impoverished countries in the world, killing Afghan civilians at very high rates and undermining the United States in multiple ways.

The war pushes the U.S. further into debt. The United States spends $1.5 billion per month in borrowed money on the Afghanistan war.

It undermines the rule of law; the U.S. holds thousands of Afghans in prisons without charges. Torture is reported. And robotic drones result in deaths. Legal experts have described these actions as war crimes.

It undermines democracy by propping up a corrupt leader put in office by a low-voter-turnout elections that are rife with fraud.

And it undermines national security by creating more enemies every day–enemies that will hate the United States for a generation or more.

War casualties soar in south Afghanistan-Red Cross

* Number of war-wounded in Kandahar hospital at record high

* Deteriorating security complicates aid delivery, ICRC says

* Increasing number of armed groups makes ICRC access harder

GENEVA, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Security is deteriorating in Afghanistan, creating more war casualties and making it harder for aid agencies to reach people in need of food, water and health care, the Red Cross said on Tuesday.

In the southern city of Kandahar, Mirwais regional hospital registered nearly 1,000 war-wounded patients in August and September, record highs and double the number in the same period a year ago, the International Committee of the Red Cross said in a statement.

"This is just the tip of the iceberg, as those who suffer other sorts of injuries or contract disease as an indirect result of the conflict far outnumber weapon-wounded patients," said Reto Stocker, head of the ICRC delegation in Kabul.

NATO Lies About Civilian Death Toll, Claims ‘Sharp Decline’

With a massive escalation in the number of air strikes in Afghanistan, many were likely surprised by today’s NATO claim that the number of civilians killed or wounded in them has dramatically dropped over the past two years. The surprise is understandable because the data simply isn’t true.

The comparison between this and the “same period 2008″ is difficult, of course, because their figures for that period appear no more accurate. 188 casualties for 2008 seems itself remarkably low, when one considers that the casualties of a single air strike in that period in the Herat Province was well over 100 (including 90 deaths and a number of injuries). And this doesn’t include large numbers killed in ground attacks and night raids, of course.
