In the west there’s an expected superficial attitude when people meet which goes something like this… (Australian version follows…)
Person A:
“How’s it going?”
Person B:
“Good! …and yourself?”
Person A:
“Good!”
I remember one time in Australia when I went to work rather late, I was asked the expected
“How’s it going?” by a nearby colleague but having just replaced a flat tire in a suit I honestly wasn’t happy so I replied
“Terrible!” …and that’s when about 20 pens just dropped on the desks and everyone turned around and starred at me with mouths wide open and in total shock that someone dared to deviate from the standard expected response!
In Cyprus however, you don’t get that superficiality so people can be in whatever mood they want… something that I appreciate and never take personally.
