Freeview and DAB radio

Postby Smiler Brian » Wed May 13, 2009 11:59 am

Moving to Limassol shortly so just need to ask those in the know (that would be you lot).

In GB we have DAB radio and a digital TV service (Freeview). Do you know if Cyprus has these or are planning to have them? May just save me from bringing stuff over.

Currently Cyprus doesn't have such thing but I believe all TV transmission should become Digital by 2012.

Five more Member States (Cyprus, Ireland, Poland, Portugal, and Slovakia) have announced that digital services will be provided by 2010 at the latest.

Analogue terrestrial TV will be switched off between the end of 2010 and the end of 2012 in Belgium (Wallonia and Brussels capital region), Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Greece, France, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia and the United Kingdom.

No DAB radio in Cyprus at the moment but there is DVB-T transmission in Cyprus .At the moment u can get 2 transmission from air LTV(ALFA) and BRT1.
LTV(ALFA) transmission is scrambled but BRT1 is free to air .

U may get the LTV from Limassol but it might be difficult to get BRT1 from Limassol . Both encodings are in MPEG2 format now .

As far as i know Both CyBc and Bayrak TV completed their tenders about DVB-T transmission .
Bayrak one finished in April and CyBc one is in 5th May .

CyBc encoding System will be MPEG-2 and Bayrak ones will be MPEG-2 and MPEG-4. In this case Bayrak Transmissions will be in DVB-T and DVBT2 formats . Consumers have to careful when they are buying their set-boxes or DVBT televisions sets . Best one to try to buy that your receiver will be receives both of them . I am sure later CyBc will change from DVB-T to DVB-T2 . with DVB_T2 they can transmit from one Channal 3 HD TV channels.

For our estimation (for northern part of the Cyprus) at least more than ten years we will broadcast analog transmission on FM band .
After ASO VHF TV bands might use for WİMAX what we are thinking.
Till that time present DAB version will change as well .

I am wondering about your Digital TV set .
What kind of tuner u did have ? (DVB-T or DVBT2 ) UK is also changing from DVB-T to DVB_T2.

37" LG about 3 months old so should be up to date. DVB-T AFAIK. My daughter is looking forward to us leaving now, she has claimed it as it will not be coming with us.

BTW off topic but how much is it to get a sat system (just a basic one - can't stand sport) supplied and installed?

The sat system can be cheap if you only get a small dish and you want to watch only the free channels. But if you want sky you will need big dish over 4 meters and a sky subscription and that will be much more expensive. If you go with Nova Cyprus they can install everything for you for less than 100 Euro and then the subscription starts from 27.50 per month.

Thanks Sotos, just the free channels will be fine. Can't be doing with Sky, too many adverts.

In that case Smiler Brian, can I recommend Nilesat for the Free to air?

Good channels with movies, tv series, comedies etc.

MBC 2 (Movies/Series)
MBC 3 (cartoons)
MBC 4 (Movies/Series)
MBC Action (Movies, gameshows)
MBC Persia (Movies)
Fatafeat (Cooking channel)
Fox Movies
Fox Series
Dubai One (mainly series, gameshows and sometimes movies)
BBC World
MTV Arabia

I'm sure there are more. Shouldn't cost too much to have installed as you won't need a massive dish.
All the above are free to air. All in English. I didn't include MBC1 because thats all Arabic programs.
