Cyprus’ long division and barriers to unity

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

So we have to accept a few hundred thousand imported colonists from Anatolia inorder to be realists.

I would serve some TCs right if we were to do that. FInally realise that the imported people are in the majority and deal with them, not the few thousand remnants of the TC community. Ironic that the people who were supposed to be the center of this dispute have all but disappeared. From 113 000 they are now about 40 000 left. Turkey has obviously been good to you.

This letter (and the letter by the Yero-levendi-Gibreo-vragas-me-da-ola) published in the latest issue of Tribune...

Dear Sir

Turkey’s military is the real barrier to Cypriot unity

They say that ignorance is bliss. If so, Murray Rowlands (Cyprus’ long division and barriers to unity, 8 May 2009), must be delirious. And ignorance has led to absurdity. In all my years of following press comment on Cyprus, I can safely say that I have not come across a more ignorant and, frankly, hopelessly misguided commentary on the island's problem than this. This absurd piece does severe disservice to Tribune’s usually serious journalistic approach.

Above all, it is insulting to Cypriots of all ethnic backgrounds, who are working hard to reunite their country in the face of intransigence from Turkey's military and the Turkish ‘deep state’, which continue to oppose any settlement other than a pseudo-solution which will, forever, keep the island under their control.

Rowlands’ article was an inelegant attempt to exonerate the invader and occupier, Turkey, and point an accusing finger at the victim of Turkey’s aggression, the Cypriot people, who are mischievously called “Greeks” and “Turks” throughout this negative article as if their common Cypriot identity, which will be the foundation stone of any solution, counted for nothing.

As for the description of mainland Turkish colonists who have been (and continue to be) illegally imported from Turkey in their tens of thousands, not 35 years ago but over a 35 year period in order to change the island’s demography, as “immigrants”, Rowlands must recognise that this constitutes a war crime under international law. Unfortunately, international law and any notion of legality seem to be the last thing in Rowland’s mind. Cyprus has problems enough without such unbelievably inept interventions especially from people who are meant to be well informed.

Much easier to manage during war this way. Each TC stands behind one Turkish soldier.
