1915: Greece refuses to annex Cyprus

Postby kurupetos » Sat May 09, 2009 6:17 pm

The Island of Cyprus has been offered by Great Britain to Greece on condition that she joins the war on the side of the Allies. Annoucement of this offer is made in two London newspapers this morning.

Why do you think Venizelos rejected the above offer?

Having in mind the disastrous events in Asia minor, I reckon because he feared he couldn't keep it. I think he made the right choice.

would england have ever given up cyprus because it is said that england offerd greece cyprus in secret to go to war while the ottomans sided with the germans so england took control and offerd to greece..

what i want to know is if greece was willing to kill off all the turks for the sake of cyprus they where obivously willing to go to war for cyprus right?? if they really did this trying to kill all turks.. so why say no to england when they offerd it for a war.. war which they where according to turks willing to have to take control of cyprus...

All propaganda. There is no official document to suggest that Britain offered Cyprus to Greece other than newspaper articles and talk politic.

Greece has never wanted to rule Cyprus. It has always allowed it independence since it has never been a threat to Athens, unlike other kingdoms which were subdued by union.

There is no smoke without fire, or is it the opposite. :?

IMO, Venizelos acted wisely, because Ottomans/Turkey would have had the upper hand, given the fact Greece would have been unable to cope with one more front (Bulgaria, Thrace, Aegean-Asia Minor).

Thereby, Cyprus would have been invaded by the Turks and lost, following the losses of Eastern Thrace and Smyrna.

Greece became a union of the City kingdoms, Macedonia, Sparta etc because of the rivalries causing conflicts. Cyprus has never caused a conflict, so Athens has never wanted to rule over Cyprus to subdue insurgency ...

(The Junta-coup was a foreign CIA thing and nothing to do with Hellenic Greece.)

And also because the Cypriots would have put up too good a fight - like the Spartans.... It only took 300 Cypriots to chase out the Brits!
