Decent books on Cyprus problem

I was wondering whether you lot know about any good books written in English about the Cyprus 'Problem'? I realise it is difficult to find non-biased sources of information, but what in your opinion would be some of the best, least biased books available? thanks.

"Cyprus - Hostage to History" by Christopher Hitchens.

"The Cyprus Conspiracy: America, Espionage and the Turkish Invasion" by Brendan O'Malley and Ian Craig.

Best online article on Cyprus: "The Divisions of Cyprus" by Perry Anderson. In the London Review of Books:

I'd also recommend the two Hermes flagged up.

You could also try A Business Of Some Heat, by Brig Francis Henn or The Search For A Solution by David Hannay.

By contrast, I've heard The Genocide Files is considered No 1 choice for unbiased truth in the north. Reading is believing...it's unbelievably transparent TR propaganda.

Ok thanks, I've read The Cyprus Conspiracy one already, but not the others. Any more good books?

Hi yiannisP

I asked something similar on the forum once and our dear (AWOL) Magnus (please post again :( ) suggested these, as well as The Cyprus Conspiracy ....

Magnus wrote:These are all good:

Alastos, Doros. Cyprus Guerrilla: Grivas, Makarios and the British, London, 1960.

Averoff-Tossiza. E. Lost Opportunities: The Cyprus Question 1950-1963, New Rochelle NY, 1986.

Crawshaw, Nancy. The Cyprus Revolt, London, 1978.

Holland, Robert. Britain and the Revolt in Cyprus 1954-59, Oxford, 1998.

Ierodiankonou, Leontis. The Cyprus Question, Stockholm, 1971.

Kelling, George H. Countdown to Rebellion: British Policy in Cyprus 1939-1955, New York, 1990.

Reddaway, John. Burdened with Cyprus: The British Connection, London, 1986.

The Rob Holland book is probably the most comprehensive but you might find it a bit hard going as he writes in an academic style and there's a lot of detail to plough through so it's not really casual reading. I thought he was fair in his analysis, but he has obviously rubbed some people the wrong way as the review on Amazon disagrees with his 'upgrading bestial terrorists to the status of guerillas'!

I think the best bet would be to go with Nancy Crawshaw's book as it's general enough for you to get through without too much trouble but has enough detail so you don't feel like there are gaps in the information.

Duly noted Oracle, but they seem to be a bit old. I thought a bunch of stuff was de-classified in 2000 which sheds new light on the problems?

What about Cyprus - A Modern History - William Mallinson, Bill Mallinson 2008?
