BRITISH PRIME MINISTER SEES ROLE IN CYPRUS REUNIFICATION BID

Postby paliometoxo » Fri May 08, 2009 7:29 pm

notice how only turkey and talat of north invaded cyprus leader to the turks talks of two states when it comes to cyprus problem..

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown used the strongest language yet this week to indicate UK involvement in solving the Cyprus problem, referring to recent contacts with the Turkish government and also to his friendly relations with President Christofias.

Speaking to leading members of the UK Cypriot community during a reception given by Minister for Europe Caroline Flint at the Foreign Office, Brown praised their contribution to British society and activity in connection to Cyprus.

“We believe that we can and want to play a part in reaching a solution which will be by the Cypriots themselves,” the Prime Minister said and added: “We can help in this and we shall exert every possible effort towards this end.”

Describing the ongoing effort for the unity of Cyprus as a historical challenge which can be achieved together by Britain and the Cypriots, the Prime Minister said: “And I promise you that I would do what it takes for President Christofias and Mr. Talat, putting my views to the Turkish government, as I did with the President and Mr. Erdogan in recent weeks; your aims are our aims and we wish to cooperate in achieving them.”

At this point Gordon Brown referred to the example of US President John Kennedy, who promised the Senate he would send the first man to space, only to find out that the person in charge of the space programme was not ready for such an undertaking.

“We are not yet ready to do it” the man said, only to get the answer from the President: “Now you can.” And the British Prime Minister added: “The message is about what can be done when people of good will decide that something can be done.”

During his stay at the reception, Gordon Brown had brief exchanges with almost everybody present, both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, often referring to his friendly relations with President Christofias.

Caroline Flint in her speech stressed the priority the UK attached to Cyprus and said she had the Prime Minister’s full backing in carrying out her duties.

In a message the President of the UK Cyprus National Federation Peter Drousiotis noted that the reception and attendance by the Prime Minister contributed to the development of a dialogue for the right solution of the Cyprus problem.

Participants had the opportunity to talk with senior Foreign Office officials related to the Greece-Turkey-Cyprus triangle.

Easy for Oor Broon to make platitudes when he knows he'll be forced out of office before the ink is dry on any Cyprus peace deal.

Och ye of little faith ...

Do not underestimate the commoner... William Wallace/Oor Broon ... he fights with passion and he inspires, eh?

(completely paraphrasing Robert the Bruce 8) )

He's made an impression on me, even if he has been in the tent such a wee while

It could be said of Broon that "his tea's oot" or that "his coat's on a shoogly peg". What a personal tragedy for one who yearned for a job for so long - then when he got it he found out he couldn't do it.

Cyprus could have done with its own Alex Salmond. Now there's a man who knows how to run political rings around the Auld Enemy...

I like that expression a lot, Eric... :) Almost Cypriot in its evocativeness.

And it's clear there are quite a few shoogly pegs in the north of Cyprus that some people were duped into hanging their shirt on... hung out to dry!

I only hope they have a spare coat at home to keep them warm.

Don't try it too hard bcz for most of us "the game" is over. Prepare ur minds for only mutual; individual and group relations in a divided Cyprus.
