RESTORATION OF THE APOSTOLOS ANDREAS MONASTERY

TURKISH CYPRIOT SIDE IS DOING ALL IT CAN FOR THE RESTORATION OF THE APOSTOLOS ANDREAS MONASTERY

TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat has said that the Greek Cypriot Administration was trying to prevent the restoration of the Apostolos Andreas Monastery.

He said that the Turkish Cypriot Side was doing all it could for the restoration of the Monastery.

President Talat spoke to the TAK news agency on recent reports in the Greek Cypriot accusing the Turkish Cypriot Side of preventing the restoration of the building.

Responding to reports in the Greek Cypriot press that the Turkish Cypriot Side was preventing the restoration of the Apolostos Andreas Monastary located at Cape Zafer on the Karpaz Peninsula, President Talat condemned those who were trying to lable the Turkish Cypriot Side as uncooperative.

“The smart thief is trying to overcome the landlord. This is really unmanerly. I am deeply disappointed with these claims” he added.

Drawing attention to the fact that the monastery was located within and under the responsibility of the TRNC, Talat said that attempts to create the image that the Greek Cypriot Side showed more attention to this religiously significant shrine was a waste of time.

“Just as we have overcome all the obstacles they have put before us in the past we shall overcome the present obstacles and complete the restoration of the monastery” he said.

Pointing out that restoration work had not started yet because of the sales stands and tents set up within building’s courtyard, the President said that restoration work could not start before measures are taken to relocate the stall owners.

He said that the Apolotos Andreas was part of the island’s cultural heritage and that the Turkish Cypriot Side has not only be respectful of this heritage site from the very beginning but has taken all measures to ensure that the monastery was protected and preserved.

Talat also reminded that a restoration project for the Monastery prepared by UNDP-UNOPs and funded by US Aid had failed to go through after it had been rejected by the Greek Cypriot Administration and Church in 1996.

He said that the US government had later put aside 6 million dollars for the restoration of the Hala Sultan Tekke in South Cyprus and Apolostos Andreas Monastery, 5 million of which had been allocated for the Monastery.

“But the Greek Cypriot government once again turned down the offer and the fund lapsed.

However the money put aside for the restoration of the Hala Sultan Tekke was used and the building was repaired despite all the faulty work” he added.

The President said that a comprehensive restoration project, through an intiative launched by the Turkish Cypriot Side, had been prepared by the Greek Patras University in 2007 which had once again been turned down by the former Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos.

Explaining that the project had been brought back to life with the positive atmosphere that prevailed after the technical committees and working groups started work, President Talat said that restoration project now in its implementation phase will take two years to complete.

He said that the project which is estimated to cost 5 million Euros to complete is being funded by the TRNC Department of Antiquities and Museums as well as smaller donations from various other local and international organizations.

Is this the same dept that distributed our cultural heritage to smugglers and icon thieves around the world? The "trnc" ransacked the religious and cultural heritage of the Greek Cypriots and sold it for a profit. Talat best remember what has happened to this "cultural heritage" he now professes to defend. WHere are the Greek Cypriot towns and Villages? WHere are the Orthodox icons? Where are the churches that are now used as offices, bars, stables, mosques?

Halil my friend. Do you agree that there is a lot of hypocrisy going around. After all the plundering and destruction of Greek and Byzantine heritage, they talk of Preserving Cyprus Heritage. I am surprised that anything is left. I am sure that Ap. Andreas is still standing and being looked after, but that is hardly representative of the Cyprus Heritage as we understand it. If you want to protect Cyprus Heritage, use the name of Karpasia, so our GC friends have an idea of what you are talking about. It will help, believe me.

Best regards

Deniz, agree with everything you said, just to confirm that it is still standing, I visited it last September and lit a candle. What was impressive was that there are mixture of GC and Turks looking after it and they were able to communicate in Greek.

I too have been there Yfred. My lady wife too lit a candle. At the time it was undergoing 'maintenance and repairs under the auspices of 'Unesco' or some body affiliated to it.

These leaders were not born yesterday. They were aware of what was happening.

I just wanted a comment from Halil, because he is the one posting the 'wonderful' news.

Halil, you are very good on theories. Lisen now the real facts.

AA.You can not enter Apostolos Antreas area by a normal car. You need a 4x4.

BB.Any donations are collected by the 3-4 Talat's representatives who are always sitting in the Monastery.

CC.Application for restoration which applied several years ago was finally considered "AS OF MILITARY INTEREST" and therefore after several years transfered from Talat's billsht authority to the chief of Turkish forces for acceptance.Afterwards i lost the application status .

Propaganta is good but stupid people are less and less.....

I am reminded of the words of British Prime Minister William Gladstone:

"Let me endeavor, very briefly to sketch, in outline what the Turkish race was and what it is. It is not a question of Mohammedanism simply, but of Mohammedanism compounded with the peculiar character of a race. They are not the mild Mohammedans of India, nor the chivalrous Saladins of Syria, nor the cultured Moors of Spain. They were, upon the whole, from the black day when they first entered Europe, the one great anti-human specimen of humanity. Wherever they went a broad line of blood marked the track behind them, and, as far as their dominion reached, civilization disappeared from view."
