TALAT AND CHRISTOFIAS MET TO DISCUSS ECJ’S ORAMS JUDGMENT

Postby halil » Tue May 05, 2009 12:07 pm

Mehmet Ali Talat and Demetris Christofias met on a different basis today.

The two leaders did not maintain the scheduled round of comprehensive negotiations, but rather discussed the European Court of Justice’s judgment on the Orams Case.

Talat's Special Representative Ozdil Nami and the Greek Cypriot Leader’s Special Aide Yorgos Yakovu accompanied the two leaders during the meeting.

The meeting lasted for nearly two hours.

In a short press statement after today’s meeting, the UN Special Representative to Cyprus Taye-Brook Zerihoun said the two leaders have agreed on intensifying their efforts and decided to continue their discussions in the coming days.

Talat and Christofias will move on with their discussions on the Economy Chapter as part of their comprehensive talks.

As the issue of property is one of the most critical substantial issues of the Cyprus problem, the ECJ’s Orams judgment has been very high on the agenda of Talat and Christofias.

The Turkish Cypriot Side wants to settle the property issue at the negotiations table, rather than at the courts viewing individual cases.

for time being not much detailed information come out about meeting .

TALAT SAYS SPEEDING UP THE PROCESS IS THE BEST WAY TO REMOVE OBSTACLES

TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat has said that the best way to remove any obstacles which may disrupt the current talks is to speed up the negotiations process.

The President was speaking to reporters upon his return to the Presidential Palace following today’s meeting with the Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias.

The course of the direct negotiations was taken up at today’s meeting.
The two leaders also decided to continue negotiations and intensify them even more, by more frequent meetings between their aides, Ozdil Nami and George Iacovou.

Speaking to reporters after returning from today’s meeting, the President said that today’s meeting had focused on the course of the direct negotiations and what is further needed to be done.

Commenting on the meeting, the President said that he had underlined at today’s meeting that a settlement to the Cyprus Problem could only be reached through comprehensive negotiations and that the property dispute would be solved within the framework of a settlement.

“A solution to the Cyprus Problem cannot be solved through legal battles in courts but through negotiations” he added.

He added that they had decided to continue negotiations and intensify them even more, by more frequent meetings between their aides, Yorgos Yakovou and Ozdil Nami.

“The best way of removing any outside obstacles such as the ECJ’s judgment that could disrupt the talks is to intensify and speed up the process and to reach an end result. We need to ensure that our special representatives work harder in order to achieve this” he added.

Asked to comment on Christofias’ reaction to the Turkish Cypriot Side’s response on the ECJ’s decision, the President said “He has issued a statement on the matter. He has stressed that the problem will be solved through negotiations”

Great, so they stopped discussing the comprehensive negotiations for a moment to discuss the Orams case...

For two hours no less they talked about the Orams case. Oooh, can't wait to read the outcome...

... that the leaders would intensify their efforts and continue discussions!? That's it?!!! To continue the discussions?!!!! (or as the etocyprians used to say "Beheheh" - meaning "say what?" - oops, that's from another thread).

This piece is indeed worth it's own thread though the title should be "How gullible should one be before earning the title "Turkish Cypriot"?

As ever, Halil is trying to feed us and the rest of the world the usual everything will be settled at the negotiations table tnct propagandist pollocks.

Here is the other side of the story where Pres X insists that he respects the cousrse that individuals are taking to reclaim their stolen property through the Courts.

An abstract from http://www.cna.org.cy/website/english/a ... 2.asp?id=1

......

President Christofias told reporters that discussion on the property issue would continue, adding that the Greek Cypriot side will defend its positions, which are reaffirmed by the European Court of Justice during its recent decision on the Apostolides vs Orams case.

The ECJ’s ruling of 28th of April 2009 paves the way for Cypriot displaced people to defend in an effective manner their property rights against the usurpers of their properties in Turkish occupied Cyprus, before Cypriot and other European courts.

Asked whether the Court’s decision was among the issues discussed during talks, President Christofias said that they discussed the issue, noting that he reiterated at the negotiating table his positions on the matter.

He pointed out that the Court’s decision confirms the pertinence of the Greek Cypriot side’s positions regarding the property issue.

Replying to questions, the Cypriot President said that Talat did not talk about the possibility of abandoning the talks’ process in case the British justice implements the European Court’s ruling.
