Protaras

Postby Panyan » Tue Jun 14, 2005 2:29 pm

Hello Everyone

I am new to this forum.

We are due to come out to Cyprus at the end of July. We are staying at the Kapetianos Bay Hotel in Protaras. We have 2 teenage kids - 14 and 15 - just wanted any suggestions of what there is to do and if any of you know what the hotel is like.

Thanks in advance for any help suggestions.

as far as i know kapetanios is a very ok hotel....there is a big rock with a small church on top close tp the hotel which offers a beautiful view of the area.
protaras-ayia napa area is good for nice beaches, clubbing, sex etc...not really for family vacations....the western part of the island is for family vacations(protaras is in the east part)..
there is a huge waterpark in ayia napa that you can visit, its really nice.i think there is also a museum(dont know what kind of museum)in the area....
if you are planning to rent a car then you can visit larnaka(30 min away) or the capital nicosia(60-70min) ,it will be nice as a whole day excursion as they have more museums and archaeological sites if you are interested in these kind of things.....

Cheers SK for that.

As neither of us drive we would have to use public transport. Is there a regular bus service that we can use to get around the island?

Ouch, anyone care to let panyan know about the chronic lack of public transport?

Probably better to go for taxi's panyan... unless your resort does planned excursions. In Cyprus, you really need your own transport to get around as there is effectively no public transport system.

There are some nice beaches around Protoras, if you're just after good beaches you're probably in the best spot. You should also take a short jaunt to Cavo Greco, IMHO one of the nicest spots on the island if you manage to catch it when it's not full of tourists.

Since you do not want to drive, your mobility will be very limited. However usually hotels do organised excursions as has been mentioned. Also your tour-operator (I guess, being a family, you booked a package holiday) will definitely offer a wide range of excursions of all kind throughout the whole island. (bus, boat, Safari, donkey-ride...).

Nevertheless, there are limited possibilities of public transport, but not really good ones. There is a bus going f.e. from Protaras/Ayia Napa to Larnaca as far as I know; and then from there you can take the bus to the other major cities (Limassol,Nicosia,Paphos).

Correct, for beaches you have possibly chosen the right spot, even though the area will be packed in the summer. Fig Tree Bay is very beautiful, quite small though, has a nice Cafè and also watersports. Kap Greco is recommended for the nice view and you can also go for a lovely walk there.

To move around the area a bit you could rent scooters or bicycles.

Panyan,
You are certainly in the better part of South Cyprus for beaches, a car is almost but not totally necessary. Ask the Hotel for bus times but don't bank on them. The small chapel previously mentioned is approached by too many steps at the front in July heat but just a few seconds up the rocks at the back. Konnos bay approached by steps alongside the Grecian Park Hotel / adjacent apartments is reasonable but a bus or Taxi ride west of your Hotel (appx 10 mins). Lots for teenagers to do but Protaras is 20 years too far gone for perambulating geriatrics like me. I had business there last week & couldn't wait to leave but you will enjoy your holiday I'm certain. My nephew runs Jeep safaris as do lots of others, if you wish to see more of the Island than 'Mr & Mrs sit by the pool bar' does then it is an option as you have a guide too. I covered 2800 kilometres in 6 days last week so you could see a lot although I would not recomend that kind of schedule. Cape Greko is nice and there are some nice little coves to the North East. Just explore but take frequent small sips of water, July & August are hot & I have to go back in mid August, I'm too old for that kind of heat now. I hope you and your family have a memorable time - relax & enjoy, don't rush ,the sun will be shining wherever you are and will be shining exactly the same wherever you are going.

Thank you all for you helpful comments and suggestions. We have booked this holiday independently (first time we have done this) as the hotel was recommended to us by my husbands work colleague.

I am so looking forward to my holiday in Cyprus.

Thanks once again for all your help.

Kind Regards
