Methods Employed by Britain to Control Cypriots ...

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Methods Employed by Britain to Control Cypriots ...

Postby Oracle » Sun May 03, 2009 12:11 pm

I came across this statement from a British Intelligence Officer describing prevailing security practices in the "Bad Summer of 1958" when the Anglo-Cypriot conflict pitched:

"... you can get away with anything in this country [Cyprus] as long as you don't leave any bruises ... everyone in authority has perjured themselves again and again in order to stifle the allegations of mis-treatment."

(Britain and the Revolt in Cyprus. R.F. Holland)

In an exchange with an "RAF pilot" on another thread, it became obvious how little we know of the methods employed by Britain to achieve its aims abroad. He was not even aware that Britain used air strikes on our Island, terrorising civilians ....

Since there were so few EOKA fighters, could aerial bombardments, really be justified?

During 1957, the RAF element in Cyprus was strengthened with the arrival of Auster army co-operaton aircraft, Sycamores of No.284 Squadron and Whirlwinds of the JHU were used to advantage in the mountainous hinterland. By the end of the year, Meteor NF13s of No.39 Squadron were flying regular anti terrorist patrols and the occasional strike against mountain strongholds. Sea venoms of No.809 Squadron flew a number of rocket strikes against EOKA for a period in 1958 while H.M.S. Albion was in the Mediterranean. For over another year, military operations continued until the State of Emergency could be lifted. Other aircraft which were used in Cyprus were Chipmunks of No.114 Squadron and Hunter F6s of No.1 Squadron.

This source, admitting some air strikes, surely has to be taken in the context of constituted cover-ups.

O I think you should already know my views re British occupation/ actions in Cyprus.

Any terrorist action taken by the British Government to suppress the wishes of the vast majority of the Cypriots was totally wrong.

One of the new arrivals from C44F, "zgn", with a thread in general chat ... said he wasn't aware the RAF bombed in Cyprus.

Is he a "RAF" Pilot? :?

Because if he was then he would surely be aware that the RAF was active in Cyprus. He should be able to recite every single RAF squadron, each squadron's history, where each squadron had served, and what equipment each squadron utilised.

Some of the squadrons you mention above are still active today. No. I Squadron is now a Harrier Squadron.

I don't know. He started off by saying:

zgn wrote:Would love to know which village you were born in and when - also which Brit aircraft was bombing you in Cyprus, who knows, it may have been me!

... and then later said to Jerry :?

By the way, never dropped bombs on anyone - well not on Cyprus anyway - and can not think of a time when the RAF did so either but will not argue any proof to the opposite.

So I tried to check this out and came up with that great book by Holland, discussing the tactics employed by Brits during the de-colonisation times.
