Dear Baroness Scott

It is with great dismay and sadness that I write to you, as President of the party I voted for in the last election; a party which I feel has let me down.

I have tried, without success, to secure some kind of acknowledgment from Nick Clegg - and originally Baroness Ludford - on an issue which, as a UK born citizen of Cypriot origin, is particularly important to me. I have been waiting since April.

I attach below the relevant correspondence in the hope that you might be able to shed some light on the matter. Perhaps you too might want an explanation as to why a fundamental point of LibDem policy and principle can be avoided in this way.

I thank you for your attention.

I am sorry that you haven't had replies. I will chase them up,

Dear Mr Cypriot

Thank you very much for your email to Nick Clegg MP. Nick has asked me to reply to you on his behalf. I am sorry for the delay in responding, but I hope you will understand that, due to the sheer volume of correspondence which Nick receives, it can take some time for us to reply.

I’m sorry if you were disappointed by Sarah Ludford’s comments on this issue. In saying that many would find the decision ‘strange’, Sarah was referring to the fact that EU law is currently suspended in application in North Cyprus, whereas the judgment in question effectively tries to enforce it through UK courts. Of course, it is agreed by everyone that we want to move forward from the status quo and that we want to see serious negotiations leading to a settlement. The primary point is that we need a political lead on this issue, working towards a solution for Cyprus which is acceptable to both communities on the island, rather than simply forcing the courts to try and deal with matters which politicians should have addressed. In commenting on this judgment, no opinion was being given on the technical correctness of the judgment; nor was Sarah seeking to minimise the sufferings of Cypriots of either community who lost their homes in 1974.

Thank you once again for emailing us.

Best wishes

Anna Brown

Dear Ms Brown

Thank you for your reply.

Forgive me but this does not address the substantive points I made in my original – and ignored – email to Baroness Ludford. If this is all the LibDems are prepared to say on the matter, surely an assistant of the Baroness could have dispatched such a response on her behalf, many weeks ago?

Dear Mr Cypriot

Thank you very much for your email to Nick Clegg MP. Nick has asked me to reply to you on his behalf. I am sorry for the delay in responding, but I hope you will understand that, due to the sheer volume of correspondence which Nick receives, it can take some time for us to reply.

I’m sorry if you were disappointed by Sarah Ludford’s comments on this issue. In saying that many would find the decision ‘strange’,

Really? Can you tell me who, unless they have a vested interest, like, say, Turkey's military, its subordinate regime or buyers/occupiers (unwitting or otherwise) of stolen property? Please can you confirm whether Mr Clegg too finds the decision of the European Court of Justice 'strange'?

Sarah was referring to the fact that EU law is currently suspended in application in North Cyprus,

But, as I said in my original letter, it is suspended only because Turkey's military does not allow European law to apply. This is what is strange, not the ECJ decision. And if the LibDems were aware of the sensitivities you would not refer to the area of Cyprus controlled by Turkey's military in capital letters, as though it were a legitimate, recognised entity, which, and I'm certain Mr Clegg is aware, it is not.

whereas the judgment in question effectively tries to enforce it through UK courts.

And why shouldn't it, given that Turkey's military prevents enforcement in the part of Cyprus it still occupies, in breach of UN Security Council resolutions?

Of course, it is agreed by everyone that we want to move forward from the status quo and that we want to see serious negotiations leading to a settlement. The primary point is that we need a political lead on this issue, working towards a solution for Cyprus which is acceptable to both communities on the island, rather than simply forcing the courts to try and deal with matters which politicians should have addressed.

But as I explained in my letter to the Baroness, the Cypriot community in the north is now outnumbered by settlers – imported from Turkey in breach of international law – by two to one. So how can the political will of the legitimate Cypriot community there be properly exercised? Most in the north have taken advantage of their EU citizenship, some moving south, some leaving the island altogether for a better life, to be replaced by citizens from Turkey. Mr Clegg ought also to be aware that the 'state' broadcaster in the north, BRT, has now banned the term 'Turkish Cypriots'. People living there must now be referred to as 'Turks of Cyprus'.

In commenting on this judgment, no opinion was being given on the technical correctness of the judgment; nor was Sarah seeking to minimise the sufferings of Cypriots of either community who lost their homes in 1974.

I should hope not. But the Baroness's comments would certainly have upset many, many Cypriots – and coming from both sides of the current divide – whose human rights have been trampled on, and continue to be trampled on. Perhaps an apology is in order.

Perhaps the pinkos don't know that there are many more GC votes in the UK than TC ones. Perhaps you should inform them and see if they come off the fence.
