Famagusta photo exhibition in Brussels

29.APR.09

A new photography exhibition dedicated to the fenced-off town of Famagusta has opened at the European Parliament in Brussels.

The show was organised by the Famagusta Municipality, represented at the event by Mayor Alexis Galanos and member of the Municipal Council Costas Hadjikakou.

It was held under the auspices of Democratic Rally MEP Panayiotis Demetriou, Socialist MEP Lidia Geringer and European Peoples Party MEP Robert Atkins.

Speaking at a press conference, Galanos said it was a paradox that Turkey was aspiring to join the EU and was at the same time a member of the UN Security Council, but refused to implement Security Council resolution 550 for the return of Famagusta to its legitimate inhabitants.

He added that the return of the "ghost town" could be a confidence-building measure in efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, and reiterated his proposal for a team of EU experts to visit the town in order to record the possibilities of a future reconstruction.

For us Famagusta boys pictures like these are enough to make goodwill evaporate.

Nothing justifies the fate of the community of Famagusta, and of the town itself. This is a reminder of who we are dealing with. You don't forget something like this.

What I don't get is, say for instance the people who used to live in Istinjo have since 74 been living in a GC property. The GC wants to return to their home but the TCs home in Istinjo is in ruins...or even the other way round whereby a TC wants to return but cannot for whatever reason...

What would happen in cases like these? :?
