connecting a lan line

i want to know the best way to connect to my ps3 .... and i want to know if i can splice the lan so that someone can use the internet when im not on the console without unplugging my console every time... need input...

You need to buy a small hub which then plugs in to your modem, you can then plug 2 or more devices (depending on the type of hub) into that. Everyone can then use the internet connection at the same time. Anywhere that sells computer kit will know exactly what you need and it is not expensive.

Looking at that, it appears he still needs a hub! It did also occur to me he might be connected to his modem via USB.

The one my son has uses a standard CAT5/6 ethernet cable.

Yeah, but that's 4 pairs x 2 = 8 wires. How many of those does it actually use? Have a look at where the CAT-5 is inserted and count which pins are actually there!
