Half of the country are still slipping with goats (sorry INSAN, didn't want to heart your feelings there) and the government is spending 1$bln on Air Defence system... they agreed on purchasing S-400 today.

I wish they corrode as MIGs29

S400 is impressive after seeing tests... but i thought S400 would serve Domesting Airt Defence and wasn't manufactured for export, only S300 did. I guess OIL money have stopped flowing in as before so here you go... S400 for export.

Unfortunately theres no such official news, some of the greek defence forums and sites have been talking lately about a interest in purchase being made, and a source from Rosoboroneksport which sells russian made systems abroad has supposedly said that turkey has approached them but theres no official confirmation. Turkey usually approaches the russian markets so that america will lower its price on their systems, i personally think turkey will purchases the patriot system as the last thing the americans want will be to see turkey start co-operating with russia on arms developments and purchases. In its air-defence system RFI turkey has stipulated co-production and technology transfer as it has done for every weapons system it has purchased the past ten years, given that the s-400 defend russias airspace at this point they will not give it with tech transfer to a nato member even though with this crisis they are desperate to make a major arms sell given their financial condition. It is far more likely they will offer the s-300 with tech transfer as it now an outdated system for them. Overall turkey will go for the patriot system once the americans lower the cost and agree for co-production of the missiles.

What is more interesting in my opinion is the arguments greece is having with russia concerning the BMP-3 purchase. The deal was supposed to have been signed soon and now has been postponed indefinately.

S-400 to guard Turkey against US shield?

Turkey is vying to obtain the Russian S-400 missile system amid prospects of the deployment of a US missile defense shield in Eastern Europe.

The Turkish officials have expressed 'strong interest' in the S-400 Triumf air defense system, RIA Novosti quoted Anatoly Aksenov, a senior adviser to the Russian arms exporter Rosoboronexport as saying on Monday.

An official from the Russian delegation to an upcoming arms show in Turkey attributed the inclination to Ankara's concerns about Washington's plans to deply elements of an anti-missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic by 2013.

Using MIM-104 Patriot interceptor missiles and a radar facility, the shield is claimed to form part of a global defensive umbrella.

"We have explained to Turkish officials that S-400 is not just a simple air defense system but an element of strategic missile defenses, which can be placed in one country but protect the airspace over a number of neighboring countries," the official said.

Undersecretary for the Defense Industry Murad Bayar has already raised the issue with Moscow officials, said Aksenov.

The S-400 defense system has been exalted as the world's 'most formidable' apparatus against aerial and missile attacks should its theoretical strike capability prove demonstrable in action.

Performing twice as good as the MIM-104 Patriots, the system can reportedly direct missiles towards targets within 400 km (248.5 miles) which is equal to two times the distance flown by the US rocket.

This is while, the S-400's radar can reportedly spot targets within a range of 700 km (435 miles) and is claimed to be capable of detecting stealth aircraft as well -- a feature that would make the system the first of its kind should the claim prove to be true.

The US missile project has put Moscow and Washington at loggerheads since its emergence under the previous US administration. Moscow complains that the facility would constitute a 'deterrent' and a 'security risk' threatening its sovereignty.

Russia's defense mentality has, ever since, moved towards taking the necessary precautions and arming its neighboring states with the required defensive structures.

TUrkey has shunned american systems, with the exception of its air force the past couple of years and instead has opted to co-produce weapon systems with other countries such as south korea and italy. It has gained massive contracts worlwide with its developed systems for export. AMerica has not been to happy about any of this, they will exert great purchase for no such purchase to be made on Erdogan. He has in the past resisted that pressure on a lot of systems, hopefully he will do so again.
