18 cats poisoned by 'animal-hating psychopath' in two-mile radius

By LUKE SALKELD

Eighteen cats in one town have died after being poisoned with anti-freeze – triggering a warning to owners to keep their pets indoors.
There are fears they are being targeted by an animal-hating maniac.
Seven from neighbouring terraced houses in one street in Bridgwater, Somerset, have died in the last week alone. It follows a spate of 11 deaths four months ago, two miles away.

If Cypriots kept their dogs under better control and CLEANED UP AFTER THEM when they shit all over the streets and outside people's front gates or doors - there might not be so much animosity towards dogs.

Oracle was recently berating me for advocating that owners should clean up after their dogs and commenting that Cypriots just never do this. Royally taking the piss about it and crowing that where she lives she doesn't have to.

Responsible and CARING pet owners do.

The number of stray and street dogs in Cyprus is probably responsible for the high anti dog feeling. Seems lots of Cypriots don't believe in having their dogs spayed to stop them breeding (rather odd considering they don't like stray dogs).

I am disgusted also (VERY DISGUSTED) with ex pat Brits who are leaving Cyprus in great numbers and abandoning their pets here - there is one animal charity I know of who is naming and shaming them. To me that's worse than the cruelty to dogs by Cypriots I come across because the Brits like to hold themselves out as being a nation of animal lovers.

No, my dear, I did address the issue. Maybe the issue is contentious, but the issue that I perceive, placed here on Cyprus Problem and directed at "uncivilised Cypriots" is not one about the moral rights and wrongs of animal welfare, of that I am sure we would all at least "sing from the same hymn book" if not exactly all practice the faith to the same extent.

No, BOF, Sir. The issue is one of brandishing Cypriots as uncivilized animal abusers as soon as some individual (was he Cypriot?) perpetrates a wrong. But, hypocritically as you have done, excuse such behaviour back in the UK just because we have a "decent" RSPCA to mop up the carcasses. Righteous indignation that such a thing is really typical of the UK is another laughably hypocritical nonsense reaction.

Animal abuse is as common (if not more so) in the UK as elsewhere!

Can you buy Lanate freely in the UK?

Are they trapping song birds on lime sticks outside your house in the UK?

Why can't you EVER admit, just sometimes, that there are some things, even if not very many things, that Cyprus cannot be proud of or some things that would make Cyprus a better place if they were changed?

And why are YOU allowed to criticise YOUR host country (the UK) as much as you like whilst maintaining that anyone living in Cyprus who is not Cypriot should not be allowed even to express any opinions, let alone criticise?

Perhaps you better go back to just slapping your blood dripping map of cyprus into posts. The one where the blood looks like pink blancmange.

What a lovely spectacle that is for anyone considering using this forum to gain information about Cyprus because they are thinking of visiting or moving here.

I'll just retell the story of how my hubby's Golden retriever was poisoned a few years back, by Warfarin left as bait in their own barn -- laid out by a "friendly" neighbouring farmer -- in the UK!

Banned pesticides?

Regretably friends of mine also had their dog poisoned on the same day but sadly it died, as well as two cats, a fox and numerous birds. This was caused by poisoned meat being laid near the main crossroads leading into Souni/Country Rose etc. So be careful where you walk your pets and keep them on a lead.

Why allow your dogs to roam the streets? How do you clean up their mess?

I hope your dogs makes a complete recovery but please keep them secure so that they keep the environs CLEAN and your dogs safe.

Deniz who said they were roaming loose? - and thats maybe the difference here. in her country people are expected to pick up their dogs mess in plastic bags. and there are even bins provided for it. not picking it up will get you spoken to or advised what you should do, usually by complete strangers...some parks even have sand pits for owners to take their dogs to do their business.
It is also the norm to have your pet spayed or neutered so it cannot get pregnant and have pups if it should come into contact with other dogs.
It is also a councul rule that in streets all dogs should be kept on leads.

Many do roam loose. I take my dog out regularly and make sure he does not pick anything up that he should not. All I am asking is that 'pet' owners be vigilant. If ALL dog owners were careful and took better care of their animals, perhaps there would be no need for the brutal poisoning of these poor mutts.

Why would anyone in their right mind want to poison animals?

deniz, it could be from barking all night long...not that i condone such practices...

better still why not train dogs not to eat anything out of strangers hands...i have a mate with 3 dogs and these dogs will pick nothing unless their master offers it to them...
