Grivas' Girls ... The Women of EOKA!

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby miltiades » Sun Apr 26, 2009 11:38 pm

On June 30th 1958, " Turk Mukavemet Teskilati " TMT issued leaflets in Turkish urging the T/C youth to join them in fighting EOKA and ENOSIS.
T/C police from Nicosia mainly undertook the training of "conscripts" into TMT .
A further proclamation by TMT in early July 1955 demanded that mainland Greek tutors at various schools be forced to resign , also demanded that the flying of the Greek flags be declared illegal , an act which became law and enforced on those in defiance , schools mostly , the punishment was that schools would be forced to close until the Greek flag was removed.

To counter these TMT proclamations EOKA isssued in Turkish a proclamation in which GRIVAS stated that the struggle was one against the British occupation and not against the T/Cs , underlining that " our intentions towards the T/Cs are genuine and friendly and that we look to the T/Cs as our genuine friends and allies against the British rule , and as far as we are concerned we shall never accept their degradation , an attack on their self respect or their properties "
Perhaps the beginning of the intercommunal conflict was just developing.

I wouldn't expect this from u Miltiades. U copied just a small excerpt that suits ur propaganda needs from psywarrior.com and pasted it here to prove everyone how honourable were ur EOKA fighters.

Grivas was not a stupid man like u to double his "enemies" before finishing his job with Brits first. U r simply thinking that we r too naive and dumb not aware of what u r trying to do. U even went further and ridiculously fabricated a propaganda on behalf of Grivas that a fascist, anti-leftist, Turk hater like Grivas genuinely underlined his intentions towards TCs would be friendly.

U only revealed ur real personality Milti, that u suppose urself as shrewdy as Grivas but neither Grivas nor u have brain. I'm sorry if u r offended but I really didn't expect it from u.

The above excerpts ARE NOT from any site. These are mostly from memory of events developing in Cyprus during that time. and also from recollections of written material . The fact of the matter is that you find it objectionable when faced with information that is contrary to propaganda you have been forced to digest. G/Cs also attack me when I post views and realities that occur ed that are contrary to their own perception of events.
The leaflet that EOKA published as well as the TMT are documented in Grivas's book on the struggle published in 1961 .
Accuse the man of many things but liar he was not .
Did he hate the T/Cs ? In the beginning the T/Cs did not enter his mind , they were not there as far as he was concerned. Much later his feelings changed a great deal.
Don't go shooting the messenger mate .

Thanks for the video Oracle. The EOKA struggle should never be forgotten amongst the Cypriots - no matter how much the oppressive Turk and British nationalists try to call these heroes terrorists.

As far as I know, she is alive.

I remember years ago, when I was very young, I was with my mum in a supermarket and Vasilou passed next to us. My mum turned to me and said "The woman who just passed is Afxentiou's wife". I remember my self turning and staring at her like she was Afxentiou himself.

.... so handsome! I hope they had children.

It's not Afxentiou in youtube video. It must be from a movie.

TMT Leaflet Circulated on 7 May 1958:
"Oh Turkish Youth! The day is near when you will be called upon to sacrifice your life and blood in the "PARTITION" struggle - the struggle for freedom... You are a brave Turk.
You are faithful to your country and nation and are entrusted with the task of demonstrating Turkish might. Be ready to break the chains of slavery with your determination and willpower and with your love of freedom. All Turkdom, right and justice and God are with you. PARTITION OR DEATH."
quoted in Nancy Crawshaw "The Cyprus Revolt", 1978.

In all our history the Turks are the ones who choose to become our enemies by attacking us with the aim to deprive us from our freedom and impose on us the rule of some foreign empire. This was the case with the inter-communal conflict as well. We were fighting against the Colonialialists and the Turks choose to attack us and start the conflict.

Rhodes united with Greece in 1947, and nothing bad happened to your minority there. The same with your minority in Thrace. Not only nothing happened to them, but their population greatly increased, even during the several years that Junta ruled Greece. On the contrary, the Greek minorities in Turkey are almost totally annihilated by the Turks.

So stop trying to excuse your attacks and crimes against us by using baseless imaginary scenarios. The FACT is that we were fighting against the Colonialists for the freedom and self-determination of Cyprus from foreign rulers, and you collaborated with the Colonialists, attacked us starting the inter communal conflict while at the same time demanding that we should be annihilated from half of our island so you can create some separate state on land stolen from us.

Grivas at Kykko Monastery (Easter 1956):

Louella KOKKINOU (left) As a young secretary working for the Cyprus Transport Corporation, she was able to arrange the best smuggling routes and drivers to use for the delivery of messages and arms to EOKA personnel. The CTC was the Island's largest transport company. The eldest of three sisters - Maroulla and Ourania were the other two - she was eventually arrested and held by the authorities in Nicosia's Central Prison. While in prison, she revealed she was the leader of EOKA's movement. Later MAKARIOS told the world's media that she was one of many prisoners being brutally treated by her captors.

She was arrested and interrogated for the first time on 23.05.56. In reality Louella Kokkinou, with her sister, was highly trusted as a courier by GRIVAS.

Mrs Arrieta ROUFOS (right) the wife of Rodis ROUFOS, the Greek Consul in Nicosia who smuggled weapons in his diplomatic bag for delivery to Eoka.

Zoulla IOANNIDOU: highly regarded by Eoka. Married to IONNIDES, Andreas (a Limassol bookseller, arrested on 05.12.55, trying to smuggle sub-machine guns in crates from aboard MV Aeolia).

Image

They were granted permit by the BadBrits (Feb. 1956) to marry in the Holy Virgin Church in the village adjoining the detention camp where no one knew Ionnides. When the 20-year-old bride, arrived, she said their party had been delayed, as many of them had been searched at a nearby roadblock. Four police officers in civilian clothes took up positions near Ionnides at the altar.

As the bridegroom was driven to his wedding - in handcuffs - British paratroops armed with Sten guns cordoned the church.

Armed British soldiers on guard to stop any escape attempts.

But when the wedding party arrived, the villagers, carrying candles, were packed inside. The Royal Inniskillings' major in charge of the escort muttered: 'Good heavens, the whole village is here.' At the entrance of the church, Ionnides jumped down from the Black Maria. Two black-robed priests watched as he was released from his handcuffs.

After the religious ceremony, Ionnides embraced the bride before being put in a police van and returned to prison. Pathe newsreel cameras covered the event.

Then the white-gowned bride stood alone on the church steps and waved good-bye to her new husband. Ionnides climbed into the Black Maria for his ride back to the barbed wire-enclosed camp.
