Mikis Theodorakis’ interview with “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”
Athens, 21.04.2009
World-famous music composer Mikis Theodorakis commented on last December’s rioting in Athens and other major cities in Greece and to the stance of the Greek youth, while he also underlined the importance of education and culture in resistance and referred to his own resistance past and his love for music, in a full-page interview with the newspaper “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”.
“Those who destroy should not be identified with those who really want to bring about change,” he said, adding that if he was 30 years younger he would found a European movement to salvage culture.
He also maintained that the country’s fate is in the hands of less than ten extremely rich people – not politicians – and underlined the need for the people to mobilize in European level to effectively control the political and economic sector.
He condemned the stressful modern way of life and the role of television, and concluded that “our wealth is education and culture.”
