Hi Folks,
Seems a long while since our last disscusion on the Art of Tattoo so I thought maybe a little history on the subject might get you all motivated:
Its debateable when and where Tattoo’s first originated. In 1991, a five thousand year old tattooed man ‘Otzi’ the ice man made the headlines of newspapers all over the world when his frozen body was discovered on a mountain between Austria and Italy. This is the best preserved corpse of that period ever found, the skin bears 57 tattoos: a cross on the inside of the left knee, six straight lines 15 centimeters long above the kidneys and numerous parallel lines on the ankles. So we know then that the practice goes back at least 5000 years and most probably to the dawn of time.
Tattoos were used to decorate the body in Ancient Egypt when body art on the chest, hips, arms, chin and nose was implicitly erotic and certain motifs were used to signify a person’s fertility, love or sexuality.
Before this Tattoo’s were undoubtedly used by the ancient inhabitants of Cyprus at about the time of the Greek colonization and it is well documented that the Greeks passed the practice on to the Romans and it soon spread amongst the people of Europe and Africa.
Across the Globe in Polynesia also it was immensely popular and remains so until this day as it does in Asia, notably Japan where many Master Artists hail from.
So Tattoo’s have been prevalent around the world for thousands of years and even found here in Cyprus but nobody would pretend that they have ever experienced their current popularity. Today people from all walks of life can be seen proudly displaying their personal body art. Like everything in life, tattoo’s have moved on over the years and now the work of the top Artists is of the same quality as that that hangs in many of the art galleries of the world. Equally popular with both men and women these striking adornments bring pleasure to many including a large number of the rich and famous.
These days both men and women have tattoos to denote everything from their favourite football team, their most loved flower, to the birth of their child and many other things they love or wish to remember, far too numerous to list here.
Cyprus is blessed as a retreat for many great artists from abroad and indeed some home grown ones too so you could most certainly take home a tattoo to be proud of from this lovely island. What better souvenir of our delightful island could you take home than one that lasts a lifetime.
And by home I mean either here or abroad.
