So I'd still like to hear from Halil about the PROMISES when he/she said in the OP......

The north were told to vote "yes" and everything would be OK as they would join the EU in a "reunited" Cyprus. What the north wasn't told, (or maybe didn't want to hear), was that those in the free areas would have to be convinced to vote "yes" too. This "yes" was, wrongly as it transpired, taken as read.

The Annan Plan was, of course, so skewed in Turkey's favour to ensure that it would allow its minions to vote "yes" that the people in the free areas saw no upside in voting "yes" and overwhelmingly voted "no", rendering any promises to the north null and void.

I agree that the AP was skewed in Turkey's favour. Of course, Cyprus's accession to the EU was already on track, regardless of how the vote would go in the referendum. the AP pandered to the pertitionists in the north by sowing the seeds for future strife, and much of the support for the AP came from those quarters.

whilst we are on this subject, given that the settlers from Turkey also voted in the referendum, and given that all the settlers had a vested interest to vote "yes", it would be interesting to work out what percentage of the TCs actually voted "yes" - it would put the 65% "yes" in a different perspective.

Divide and rule hey, I take it you are British and mad to go with it?

Where do you see the divisiveness in my question YFred? I realise it may well be a little awkward, but would you care to enlighten us on how many people voted on the referendum in the north, and of those that voted, how many of them were settlers from Turkey?

PRO-‘NO’ rallY markS 5th anniversary of annan plan referendum

Scores of people yesterday gathered around the Ledra Palace checkpoint in Nicosia to celebrate the five-year anniversary of the Greek Cypriot people’s rejection of the 2004 Annan Plan.

With banners reading, “Annan Plan = insult and abuse of an entire population. It will never happen” and “Each nation forms and writes its own history”, more than 30 organisations and movements, as well as politicians from all areas and members of the public, crowded the crossing point to send out the message that their resounding ‘NO’ to the proposed solution back in 2004 is as powerful today as it was then.

Former President of the Republic, the late Tassos Papadopoulos, who put the Plan to the people in a referendum, was hailed as a hero and protector of Cyprus and its people’s human rights.

His wife Photini and son Nicolas were present as the main orator called for a minute’s silence in honour of the late President.

MPs and representatives from all political parties spoke during the demo, though the main orators were former Greek Defence Minister Yerasimos Arsenis, honorary EDEK chairman Vassos Lyssarides and Archbishop Chrysostomos II, whose speech was read out by the Bishop of Paphos.

The Annan Plan, drawn up by former UN Secretary-general Kofi Annan in a bid to reunify the island, was rejected by vast majority of the Greek Cypriot public, with 76 per cent voting ‘No’. This was in contrast to the Turkish Cypriot people, the majority of whom were in favour of the Plan.

"Drawn up by ... Kofi Annan" ? The Cyprus Mail would be more accurate saying "presented by ... Koffi Annan". Who actually drew up the AP is a different kettle of fish altogether.

And 5 years down the road are the GCs any closer to a solution today?
