TRNC: Destroying the Soul of A Community

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

O, this is for you......

Foni Dillirkodissa
Esh’ e-vereve-nan a-varava-stron j’ e-vereve-n mitsin,
Mes’ stus vuruvus efta varava blani-virivi-des.
Ma-vara-vromma-vara-da mu.

Ebgia-varava-san me vereve mes di-virivi-n garkian
Da lo-vorovo-ya bu vuruvu mu i-virivi-bes.
Ya-vara-lluru-vuru-dha mu.

Ebi-virivi-an j’ i-virivi-ban dis virivis bellis
Bos e-vereve-nna ba-varava-o be-vereve-ra.
Ma-vara-vromma-vara-da mu.

J’ ema-varava-epse-vereve-n din tha-varava-lassan,
J’ esi-virivi-gose-vereve-n aye-vereve-ran.
Ya-vara-lluru-vuru-dha mu.

J’ anda-varava-n dis i-virivi-bun e-vereve-she ’yan,
Este-vereve-gedu-vuruvu-n j’ eho-vorovo-ren.
Ma-vara-vromma-vara-da mu.

Bende vereve mandi-virivi-lia ’mu-vuruvu-shhepsen,
Je di-virivi-n saya-varava-n bo ’fo-vorovo-ren.
Ya-vara-lluru-vuru-dha mu.

Ana-varava-thhema-varava-n don bu vuruvu lali
Bos e-vereve-n ghliji-virivi-n do me-vereve-lin.
Ma-vara-vromma-vara-da mu.

Ghligo-vorovo-tero-vorovo-n en do vorovo filin
Dis go-vorovo-rasha-varava-s bu the-vereve-li.
Ya-vara-lluru-vuru-dha mu.

However, 'Foni Dillirkodissa' is almost certainly derived from an original Gibrizlija song called Dillirka, a song about the Tilliria region. In this instance, YFred is not guilty of destroying your culture but in enlightening you as to the true origins of one of Cyprus's most famous songs.

Here are the lyrics, translated into English from the original Gibrizlija which, I hope you'll agree, are more poignant than the revised Gibreigo (somewhat nonsense) version...

Dillirka
Full moon, starry night, I thirsted inside, all roads led to Dillirka.
I drank at the well, it’s there that I fell in love with a girl.
With almond eyes I’m drunk for ever more.

In full majesty, you stare out to sea, oh great cliffs of Dillirka.
In neighbourhoods there, the maids always wear, sweet flowers in their hair.
With almond eyes I’m drunk for ever more.

Our world fell apart, a knife through the heart, the sun set on Dillirka.
An ocean I cry, I pray to the sky, the tears to run dry.
With almond eyes I’m drunk for ever more.

If you could be mine, sweet grape from the vine, I thirst so in Dillirka.
Waves break in the sea, come reach out to me, so we can be free.
With almond eyes I’m drunk for ever more.

The Cypriot, you ARE in Love.

A lovely translation indeed.

Quite simple really. Too many thought they originated elsewhere; thought even their Goddess did.

I know it is a paradigm of a true Cypriot song ... which is why someone like YFred, having posted the youtubes of the Turkish invasion (a few posts above), does not qualify as a Cypriot ... but a culture-destroying Turk!

But thank you for the lyrics and translation ... I can't sing along to it as I always end up in tears (or at least, someone always cries if I manage to sing it :? ).

Yes, someone even thought she was Phoenician

.... But we all know Aphrodite, our GC mother, was a Greek Goddess who sailed down from the Peloponnese to enfold her baby Cyprus into her warm and loving embrace. [Some of those Greeks can be even more Cypriot than direct-line descendants of the Choirokitians  ]

And now, the evil child-snatchers are trying to kidnap her from the Hellenic Family.

What a load of absolute bollocks… Oracle, my little pinky is more Cypriot than your entire body!

All the Cypriots I’ve ever known never go on about Hellenic this and Hellenic that because they couldn’t care less! Admit it, you’re just a Slavic mongrel wasting everyone’s time in here…

Go join a Greek forum or something and bugger off where you belong.

Legend has it she was born near Paphos in south-west Cyprus.

Her real ethnic origins? Semitic? Phoenician? Who knows? Who cares? We Cypriots aren't racists. That's just an ancient myth.

If I know our Goddess, she'd have instilled such wisdom, such pathos and such love into her child that – when fully matured – beautiful Cyprus will be strong enough finally to be liberated from bondage forever.

Strange thing is GR! ... even with a Greek mother, I never thought of Cyprus as anything other than Kybros ... until I heard your "thesis" denying its history!
