I think you might have missed out the 'point' before the 33.

According to the Small Arms Survey there are about 33 guns per Cypriot in private hands. That is about as high a rate as it is in France. Not even including the arms issued to the military reserve members to be kept in their homes, there are more guns per person in Cyprus than in some US states. At least one of your Cypriot neighbors and maybe one in five or more is likely to be armed with a firearm in their home right now.

So stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

What rubbish, how the hell are there "33 guns per Cypriot"?

We would be tripping over them everywhere we went!

We have around 50,000 registered hunters with 1 or 2 shotguns each, the National Guard and reservists with no more than 2 per person, and a few dodgy types with Uzis.

Show me how that comes up to more than 25 million weapons!
Oops, I forgot to type the "100" and I was off a little anyway. There are 36 guns per 100 Cypriots.

Sorry if this is an old thread but i just had to...

Sure the Statistics may be as you say, but the Guns in Cypriot Houses are Hunting Shotguns. People actually Hunt with them here, no one uses them for protection.

Last time there was an Episode with a Shotgun it was a Family Man who lost his Job 8 Years ago and could feed his family, so he got on the roof of his house and threatened to kill himself.
He failed.

There's only a Handful to no People using Handguns for Protection in Cyprus.

Unless you are a Multimillionaire who is On Vacation in Cyprus i wouldnt bother about protection. It's pretty safe here, unless you are in the Drug Business in which case... Dont even bother coming here :P

To answer your question.
A Hunting Rifle License Costs 20 Euros to get. You need to be a Sane person with a clear penal Record to get one.

Forget handguns, you need permission from the cabinet to have one as a citizen.

Only smooth barrel shotguns are allowed and only if they are single shot single barrel or double barrel. Even air rifles need a license. No air pistols allowed. But if you are a reservist you are allowed to keep an assault rifle at home.

If you need to defend yourself get a trained rottweiler. It is always on the lookout for you and if push comes to shove and it bites a bad guy the papers will declare it a hero. If you do it you will be damned as a thug. And when no ton duty it can play fetch with you.

I don't see any reason why any civilian would want or need to possess a sidearm of any type on the Island of Cyprus.

It's an ISLAND for goodness sakes. Crime is relatively low and the police are relatively competent and efficient. It's not like you'd need a firearm on Cyprus to defend yourself. People who commit crimes on the island seldom get away. Where are they going to run to?

I'm a dual national (Cyprus and United States) and a gun owner. Most of the firearms I own in the U.S. I could NEVER take to Cyprus, and why would I?

If I need to go to the range and spend a day with my M-14, AR-15 or AK-47, I'll do it in Arizona. If I need to get away from the corrosive dysfunctional society which is America and enjoy a stable and safe environment with the family.... I'll do that on Cyprus.
