Is this figure of 21,000 eoka terrorists correct?

I seemed to remember people posting here that just a few thousand men defeated the British.

Which figure Fred ?
The number of EOKA fighters amounted to no more than 300 .

However the number of EOKA medals granted by TPAP were 21.000.

I don't know the precise number of medals ... perhaps you could post your source (chance ) ... but there were many who risked their lives hiding the freedom fighters or passing on messages, who were not directly involved with the armed conflict.

As the Simerini newspaper has recently informed us, President Tassos Papadopoulos will begin on 2 April 2005 to present medals to 21,000 EOKA [National Organization of Cypriot Fighters] fighters. According to our own information, the various fighters' associations have issued instructions that the medals should be large and heavy. Their cost is 50 Cyprus pounds each and the total charge to the state budget will amount to 1.05 million Cyprus pounds.



As we wrote in the Politis newspaper on 2 February 2004, under the heading "21,000 fighters produced on an assembly line", the number of fighters is excessive when compared to the 104 British soldiers and 203 Greek Cypriot civilians executed by the EOKA. The fighters' associations reacted to this with an announcement -- published in Politis on February 24th-- by suggesting that I suffer from "brain damage" and that "I am imagining things". Their announcement continues by refuting the above figures claiming that "from official sources that specify the name, serial number and army unit to which they belonged, the number [of British soldiers executed by EOKA] is 369 and not 104". According to the fighters' associations, this number does not include the members of the police force and of the intelligence services. The associations claim a discrepancy of 254 percent and suggest that I am, therefore, completely unreliable.

Rather than others - Mr Paphitis, included - checking their facts, I suggest you starting checking yours instead of quoting part of an article that appeared in a Greek Cypriot newspaper some years ago. It was written by a journalist - whose name escapes me - who could have spoken to me direct to get the facts, but broke a cardinal rule of quality reporting by typing fiction. Furthermore, when I asked him to run a correction, he did not, as that would not have suited his agenda.

David, I'm really interested in your position regarding Drousiotis' claim that the figures you have given as to the number of British servicement that day during the insurgence are false.

Drousiotis' claim is that your figures are not based on official sources, include servicemen who died after the end of the insurgency and apparently also include a large number of servicemen whose death was unrelated to the insurgency. He claims that according to official soldiers that actual figure is 104 and not 369. He is also saying that although you are claiming the the proper figure is 369 you have only published 366 names.

It would be really great to know your response to these claims.
