How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

(3) The choice of location is because those to be named on the memorial died in Cyprus. It is a tradition of the British Army - note there are British military cemeteries in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Gallipoli, Germany, France, Holland, Belgium et al. Some of these date back to the 19th century.

However, this isn't instigated by the British Army, but private individuals and from what I gather, they do not have the support of any Administrators (except the illegal one in the occupied territories)

(4) Since when is land owned by the British in the North going back before the creation of the Republic of Cyprus and the events of 1974 become 'disputed'? If you are suggesting that British property can suddenly be taken over at whim of a Greek Cypriot like yourself, I suggest you are marching to a different tune to most of your countrymen. By the way, where do you live today?

It's disputed in the sense that it is on Cypriot land which is under occupation by Turkey. The RoC is unable to administer in the occupied territory so you will be illegally erecting a structure which has not been cleared of planning etc. The UK has Bases here, but what they do with them/on them etc affects the Cypriots and some things are restricted.

As to where I live, I may be near your way (Cotswolds is it?) in the summer for some months so perhaps we can meet up at Waterstone's for Coffee and a chat about your new book. I may have some anecdotes. :D

(5) If the UK Government is not involved with the project, what's your beef about individual Members of Parliament and retired senior military officers from giving their private support? Just as I hope you are citizen with freedom to act as you see fit, within the law, why can't they? Just because you disagree with them, it's a tad arrogant to question their rights to act according to their conscience.

The arrogance is full on the part of the "private individuals". We are only asking that you respect the decision of the RoC, otherwise it looks like you are Colonising us again! :D

I know I may be causing you and others offense, but I must ask how you define 'terrorist' and 'terrorism'?

Relativist polysemy! Or simple semantics.

But, I don't see how it applies here since your terrorists who fought our freedom fighters in the 50's should be mourned, as all life demands. Though, not your ideology (of colonialism), which en masse this collective "Memorial" represents.

BTW

Please don't leave the forum, as I shall miss your "Dear X" posts :D

Mr Carter,

A word of advice, before you consider meeting our Oracle, please finds yourself some antidote for snake bite, just in case. Although I have been assured that her fangs have been removed, one can’t be too careful these days.

Regards.

I don't think I called Makarios Drousiotis a liar. That's your emotive word of choice. I said he had not checked the facts about my background. If, as you suggest, you know him, I would be delighted if you were able to persuade him to give his point of view on this forum. Until then, in the words of a Letters' Page editor, as far as I am concerned, this correspondence is now closed.

Have a fine day and take time out to smell the roses
David

Sir , whilst appreciating your wish to bring this "discussion" to an end let me just remind you of what you said about Droushiotis .
He wrote : ""David Carter lives in the North part of Cyprus. He was brought to the island by Asil Nadir and is writing for his Cyprus Today newspaper. He had close connections with the Denktash regime and he was actively lobbying in Great Britain for the construction in the North of a memorial to the fallen British. He is also the author of the book "The Cyprus Tapes", while he is now writing the book "Aphrodite's Killers". According to him, the aim of this book is to "confront the Greek Cypriot propaganda that the members of the EOKA were freedom fighters, while the British were a brutal occupying force that raped, tortured and killed innocent women and children".
You have dismsissed all of the above apart from that you are the author of the publications mentioned , doesnt yiour refutal of Droushiotis facts as he presented them make him a liar by the fact that according to you he is not correct therefore he must be incorrect or lying.

Another journalis , Eric posted this on this thread , is he incorrect is he lying or is he imagining things.
This is what Eric wrote :

"""But don't you feel that as a personal friend of Rauf Denktas and strong supporter of the Turkish position in Cyprus, your motive and methods are not entirely in good faith? ""

Sir , as you are a supporter of the Turkish position in Cyprus may I respectfully suggest that you put in a good word for the Turkish Cypriots , an ever increasing number of them are highly critical of Turkey and the continuing occupation of a part of their country .

Now its your turn to go smell the flowers !

Is this figure of 21,000 eoka terrorists correct?

I seemed to remember people posting here that just a few thousand men defeated the British.

What I'd like Mr Carter to do is encourage his personal shiron-friend Raufie to come on to the forum because I'd love the opportunity to frazzle his bacon... (or, you never know, perhaps he's here already expressing his viewpoint)

I don't know the precise number of medals ... perhaps you could post your source (chance  ) ... but there were many who risked their lives hiding the freedom fighters or passing on messages, who were not directly involved with the armed conflict.

I think a previous thread stated there were 300 EOKA fighters. I also added that they were not fighting a professional army (until later) but a army made up of 6 week conscripts called upon for National Service.

Your "paid" journalist. but published on Simerini.

How many Britons where executed by the EOKA?

As the Simerini newspaper has recently informed us, President Tassos Papadopoulos will begin on 2 April 2005 to present medals to 21,000 EOKA [National Organization of Cypriot Fighters] fighters. According to our own information, the various fighters' associations have issued instructions that the medals should be large and heavy. Their cost is 50 Cyprus pounds each and the total charge to the state budget will amount to 1.05 million Cyprus pounds.

As we wrote in the Politis newspaper on 2 February 2004, under the heading "21,000 fighters produced on an assembly line", the number of fighters is excessive when compared to the 104 British soldiers and 203 Greek Cypriot civilians executed by the EOKA. The fighters' associations reacted to this with an announcement -- published in Politis on February 24th-- by suggesting that I suffer from "brain damage" and that "I am imagining things". Their announcement continues by refuting the above figures claiming that "from official sources that specify the name, serial number and army unit to which they belonged, the number [of British soldiers executed by EOKA] is 369 and not 104". According to the fighters' associations, this number does not include the members of the police force and of the intelligence services. The associations claim a discrepancy of 254 percent and suggest that I am, therefore, completely unreliable.
