Boycott "The Telegraph" Newspaper? What more?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

I'm ex-forces and spoke out on this issue when it first emerged on the TRNC forums. IMO it's in poor taste to politicise this memorial and it tarnishes the memory of the servicemen and young conscripts who died after being drafted to Cyprus.

If this memorial has waited for 50 years, surely it could have waited another few months or a year or so to see out the peace process. I suspect it has been exploited by those who support the illegal occupation and division of Cyprus to gain some tacit recognition of the north. As journalists you and I both know the sub-text of the Telegraph piece and its readership profile.

I can see you homed in on positive reaction from someone of GC background, which is good PR for the supporters of this plan. But don't you feel that as a personal friend of Rauf Denktas and strong supporter of the Turkish position in Cyprus, your motive and methods are not entirely in good faith?

I am not directly involved with the memorial, although I know many of those who are involved. I look forward to our direct contact. By the way, I never served in Cyprus or lost a relative there, but I appreciate your kind remarks.

Best wishes to you and yours
David

You can't be serious Paphitis !
You don't for one moment think that David would oblige do you ?

Who is he?

David Carter lives in the North part of Cyprus. He was brought to the island by Asil Nadir and is writing for his Cyprus Today newspaper. He had close connections with the Denktash regime and he was actively lobbying in Great Britain for the construction in the North of a memorial to the fallen British. He is also the author of the book "The Cyprus Tapes", while he is now writing the book "Aphrodite's Killers". According to him, the aim of this book is to "confront the Greek Cypriot propaganda that the members of the EOKA were freedom fighters, while the British were a brutal occupying force that raped, tortured and killed innocent women and children".

Do some research Paphitis !

Dear Mr Paphiti

When we exchanged a few private lines, I said we'd disagree about some aspects of the Cyprus conundrum and agree about others. You've raised one of those where we disagree.

However, if there are certain words - the ones you quote - in the BSW site that offend you, please suggest appropriate alternatives which would satisfy us both.

Meanwhile, all the best to you and yours.

David

PS: To other contributors, who believe I am in thrall of the Turkish Cypriot side, I am not anymore than the Greek Cypriot side. But, yes, I knew Mr. Rauf Denktas quite well and I can say the same for Mr. Glafcos Clerides, both exceptional leaders of their people. I feel honored to have spent time with both men.

How about I make a few suggestions David .
Substitute Terrorist for guerrilla , and murderer for soldier .
Noted that you knew Mr Denktash as well as Mr Klerides , of course you did Sir as a journalist but Mr Klerides was no friend of yours unlike Mr Denktash. Nothing wrong in that I might add .
As I understand it you were invited to Turkish occupied Cyprus by Asil Nadir , a charming gentleman without a doubt but one who is still wanted by the British Police .
I also understand that your book " Aphrodite's Killers "
has as its primary task , according to you , to "confront the Greek Cypriot propaganda "

Your constructive contribution to the development of trust between the two communities , a trust that would allow all Cypriots to unite and respect each others concerns for the sake of the future generation of Cypriots has not been noted.

Dear Mr Carter

Would you kindly answer a few queries?

Why are you going ahead with this "memorial" despite the lack of support from the UK government, and in spite of the refusal for permission by the RoC, and in light of the objections raised by many on both (Brit and GC) sides?

In anticipation .....
