AGM condemns EU and UK for maintaining ‘apartheid in Cyprus’

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Omer Seyhan » Fri Apr 17, 2009 5:22 pm

This is the struggle of GC/Greek solution thesis VS TC/Turkish solution thesis and it cannot only be explained with what officially happened. The essentials of the problem rest within the circumstances of cold-war, black-mailings, using the trump cards, arts and wiles of politics etc.

I refuse to accept your assumption that the Cyprus problem is T/C/Turkey vs G/C/Greece... This is untrue.

So, u assume there was no problem between 2 communities until the foundation of EOKA and TMT.

There were problems, yes, but they were exasperated and manipulated by extremists in both communities. I believe the silent majority of Cypriots wanted peace and quiet.

Do u know when GC community first demanded union with Greece and what was the TC reaction?

I heard that the Church had a referendum and 99% said YES to Enosis. But then again, its the Cypriot Church which has very little credibility. I dispute that result completely. I strongly believe the Church rigged the Enosis votes because the church still commits jerrymandering today. Look at the election of Archbishop Chrysostomos.

Do u know how many times GC community repeated the ENOSIS demand until the establishment of EOKA.

Of course, the supporters of Enosis in the G/C community will naturally repeat their aims many times as do supporters of all ideas. Did TMT not repeat its aims?

Do u know what TCs felt when Cyprus unilaterally annexed by Brits to UK?

No I wasn't around in the 1920s, were you?

Do u know that while GC orthodox church was spreading Enosis thought among GCs, TC intellectuals was spreading the thought of cession of Cyprus back to Turkey?

You mean this was the aim of the TMT....

Correction: T/C intellectuals were spreading the thought of unity. I hope you do not refer to TMT as intellectuals. Intellectuals do not kill, they fight with their thoughts.

If some wacky people from your community decide to want to go to war until the death would you say they represented you?

Most Cypriots were easily manipulated by both opposing groups and the few educated ones who could see through EOKA and TMT, were quickly silenced. Even today, Cypriots don't like to talk about these killings.... :(

Do u think they need a gladio to come and arm them to turn the struggle into an armed struggle?

Yes, where else did they get the arms from? I think Greece and Turkey's Gladio helped both groups with arms.

From 1955-1957 there were no armed TC underground organizations but unarmed TCs damaged many GC shops as a reaction to EOKAs armed struggle for union with Greece. See, it just takes a while to travel from ur head to ur fists.

And there were those who were making love not war...

Do u deny that Turkish resistence and Taksim policy was developed in perfect correlation of Hellenic armed struggle of EOKA? Accepting this does not mean we blame EOKA for the blood shed. They fought for their cause. They believed it was their right to annex Cyprus to Greece or make Cyprus a Greek controlled island.

I do not deny it. But two wrongs Insan don't make a right.

If Embargoed! is genuinely an organisation campaigning for the human rights of TCs why have they not condemned the attacking and killing of TC intellectuals, writers, journalists, trade unionists and lawyers by paramilitaries in Cyprus?

Perhaps we will never know.

But if Embargoed! is raising income to advance the cause of human rights of Turkish Cypriots and is deliberately choosing to ignore these clear and fundamental human rights violations, then this may constitute a breach of the UK Trade Descriptions Act 1968.

I imagine any lawyer or other type of serious professional would think very carefully before associating themselves with such an organisation, as the damage to their professional reputation could be irreparable.

I imagine this is why the press release that insan posted was so amateurish.

Correct!

In fact the whole thing is so bizarre that even some TCs allegedly voted for Enosis!

Stop talking about sides? Who is the 'Turkish Cypriot side'? And who is the 'Greek Cypriot side'? There are no sides based on ethnicity.

Look we come from the same community yet we are disagreeing. You think human rights only belong to right-wing Turkish Cypriots who support Denktash, and I say human rights are universal.

G/Cs too disagree with one another on issues. You might find a G/C who agrees with you, and I might find one that agrees with me. This is the Cyprus problem. It is not an ethnic problem.

If you have a debate with a Chinese person and you disagree and he calls you a moron, do you then hate all 1 billion Chinese by putting them in the same boat?
