cyprus brain drain

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

cyprus brain drain

Postby Big Al » Wed Apr 15, 2009 5:54 am

i have a question for all forum members...
due to conflict and exploitation many cypriots have left cyprus and are now spread across the world. assuming the leaders come up with a solution to the cyp prob there will be a bigger problem that needs to be addressed. many of cyprus' best and brightest are living abroad, in a unified cyprus these people would be badly needed to build a new nation and create an economy that doesnt just rely on tourism and agricultural goods. (and donkey rides)
if you were president of cyprus how would you go about repatriating these people?

If your not a settler, you shouldn't worry about that.

????? i dont think you have understood my question, it has nothing to do with settlers, in relates to cypriots (both tc & gc) living abroad.

I understood your question Big Al, it's just not ripe yet to answer that. Its like saying how will Turkey repatriate the settlers back to their homeland.

Cyprus also possesses some of the most law abiding drivers in the world.

BigAl your question is outdated, but I can see how it may apply to the Turk-TCs in the occupied north who are stuck in a time-warp and may feel they cannot join the real world, much as they, resentfully, did in the '60's and conveniently blamed the GCs. I guess their crimes weigh heavily when it comes to producing a competitive Curriculum vitae ...

I don't think there is an imbalance of "brains" in the free areas of Cyprus. The GCs abroad are the same as the GCs in Cyprus. There are brilliant scientist, medics, writers etc living and working in Cyprus and also in UK/USA/Greece ... Most are simply located where it best suits them for easy access to their work, and using planes as commuter trains, to connect back to their homeland of Cyprus. There is a lot of freedom to use the world as your workplace from wherever you are, but it doesn't alter your origins or ties to home.

I think DT. indicates he travels a lot for his work with his base as Nicosia and there are others who similarly travel for work like DT. but are based in say London. So he exemplifies the modern Cypriot.

In the end, the qualities of people are in their up-bringing and how morals and ethics are instilled in them during their formative years. These are the same for GCs regardless of location. But I do despair as to what kind of misfits are being generated in the "TRNC" with such conduct displayed by their forefathers in excusing themselves for stealing, and accepting Turkey's ethnic cleansing ... The enormity of this crime is paramount when kids grow up and may have to mix with peers abroad who have the correct respect for Human Rights.

If TCs had brains, they would just get rid of the Turks and rejoin normality...

This is one of the most interesting questions ever posed in the forum.

Having a RESIDENT community of highly qualified people who have valuable skills and WAYS OF WORKING is much different than having a transient group of visitors.

To attract these peole back to Cyprus there must be a system which is based on merit, not the koumbaros network. Additionally there cannot be a major move back to Cyprus if in any solution there are tens of thousands of non Cypriots who will be given preferential treatment as "settlers" etc. In short you must make the expats real stakeholders in a new Cyprus in order to convince them to return.

So far I have not seen any move towards creating such conditions.

Hey, settlers can be given preference - but I don't think any of the settlers would trade for the same merit as an educated Cypriot. Come to your senses :) Brains ('that drained') are good for R&D, Pharmaceutical, Technology, Medicine and related business fields - what is the maximum number of hotels one can erect in Varosha - how many maximum customers can you make over tourism? This, you can't expect from the 'president', nobody is preventing you from establishing a company, bringing together an R&D force, and making your own way to contribute to the GDP, you know ;)

Well except the current working hours and the citizen's unquestionable 'hard-working' nature (!)...
