Mandatory detention in Australia…
From Amnesty International…
“The impact of indefinite detention: the case to change Australia’s mandatory detention regime”
“Amnesty International focuses on Australia’s mandatory detention policy, and in particular how it has allowed for prolonged and indefinite detention2. The policy is considered to be inconsistent with Australia’s international human rights obligations. In particular it violates the right to liberty and security of persons due to its lack of a case by case examination of the necessity and appropriateness of detention, consideration of a reasonable alternative to detention or access to independent review or an effective remedy.”

Human Rights Brief
“The legality of Australia's various amendments to its migration laws will be tested in Australian courts under existing domestic law. Regardless of the outcome of these challenges, however, these amendments contravene Australia's duties under international law.
International bodies such as the UN Human Rights Committee, as well as numerous governments and nongovernmental organizations, have criticized Australia for both its detention facilities and detention policy.”
