Question about getting a visa...

Postby artie » Sun Apr 12, 2009 3:47 pm

hello everyone!!
I would like to ask you if it is possible to work in Cyprus... just for 3 months during summer with a tourist visa.
I will come to cyprus to do an internship and i want to work at the same time coz i wont be paid for my internship.
I am from a non-european country but i have student visa in France because i am studying there. In France, germany, spain and most of the european countries i am allowed to work thanks to my student visa.
If you know anything about it just let me know.
Thank you..

Hello! The answer to your question is No. If you are not EU citizen and you come to Cyprus with tourist visa then you can not work. It doesn't matter what kind of visa you have in other countries. For Cyprus you are just a tourist. Besides, in Cyprus foreign students are allowed to work only in specific kind of jobs, like farming, and I don't think that this is what you had in mind ;) You can work illegally ... but probably you shouldn't do that.

Last year I was talking to a young Nepali while travelling on the bus from Nicosia to Limassol. He said that he was a post-graduate student here in Cyprus and that he also had two part time jobs - one as a lab technician, and one as a teacher in a private school. He said that both of these jobs were legitimate. I do not know much about the relevant legislation, but it appears to me that foreign students are permitted to work in a wider range of occupations than you think.

Thank you for your answer. I guess that he could work because he had a visa for studying in Cyprus. In my case... i am a foreigner studying in France and i will do an internship this summer in Cyprus (its like a practice work in order to get the degree). I don't know if there is any specific type of visa for students that allows them to work. Since my internship wont be paid... and life in Cyprus appears to be pretty expensive ... i would like to have at least the possibility to work in any place. I am not planning to stay in Cyprus, because anyway i have to finish my studies in France ... am i just looking for a 2 1/2 month work.

Yes, people who are in Cyprus with student visas are permitted to work in certain sectors of the economy and up to a certain number of hours per week. I am not the correct person to advise you, but I think you will find that it is possible if you have a student and not a tourist visa.

Thank you once again. I will try again to call the embassy in Paris. I call them everyday but they never answer.

Maybe post-graduates can work part time in their own fields. Or maybe he was lying because he didn't want to say to a stranger that he was working illegally!
