TALAT-WASHINGTON

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

I'm confused

Talat is actually (officially per international law etc etc) the muchtar of T/cs. A muchtar is representing all T/cs in their third warld village.

Is clear now?

CBBB,
Since 1960 TC's selects they are own MP's .

even after 1963 breakdown there was a Turkish Cypriots separated elections than GC's one .

Since 1974 all the talks about Cyprus problem has been done both sides elected leaders . On the negotiating table both sides are talking as a community leaders .

lets and see after the election results what the BBC will say .... are they going to say pseudo-elections ......

who ever loosing will buy the beers !

I don't care even if he is the king of TCs, I don't understand how such an election would apply to him - do they have something like a presidential system? if so, why isn't he taking place of the other guy (moustache and glasses guy, that looks like Asterix)

Are you going to repeat this comment after Talat meets with US Secretary of State Clinton? It might not bring back results that you're going to like...

You are a GC so of course he cannot be your President as you did not elect him, its the same for us Christofias is just the leader of the GC community for us, knife cuts both ways.

Utu, I can't believe how negative you are. Why would he be invited to USA to be given some negative information? For once the balance has swung in TCs favour on the back of the importance Turkey managed to work up. It's not for nothing; Turkey has given plenty to USA in the Middle East. Talat is doing what Denktas should have been doing 20 years ago.
I was proud of Talat when he refused to prostitute himself just to get into power as a minor partner, unlike some GC politicians we can name.

Before his meeting with the US Secretary of State, President Talat met American Jewish Community Leaders at breakfast

He will also hold discussions with the Co-chair of the US-Turkey friendship group in the Congress Robert Wexler at a working lunch.

Later in the day, President Talat will speak to various media organizations before attending a dinner to be given in his honor by the Turkish Ambassador to Washington Nabi Şensoy.

President Talat: “Our US Visit is an Important Step in Terms of International Relations” President Mehmet Ali Talat, who is travelling to the USA today on an invitation by the Unites States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, stated that this visit is an important step in terms of international relations.

Talat said that this visit also demonstrates the importance United States places on the Turkish Cypriot side. He added that he will have the opportunity to convey to the new U.S. Administration the views of the Turkish Cypriot side regarding the solution process first hand.

Talat was speaking to the journalists at the Istanbul Ataturk Airport on his way to Washington. The President underlined that he would ask US Secretary of State Clinton to support the solution process in Cyprus.

President Talat reminded the journalists that there had been an intense reaction on the Greek Cypriot side regarding his planned visit to the U.S. He stated that the visit had been delayed especially due to the intervention of the Greek Cypriot-Greek lobby. He added however, that the visit is finally taking place because the United States of America places importance on the views of the Turkish Cypriot side.

Responding to a question regarding comments by Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias that there is no progress in talks, Talat stated that these comments may be a result of mistranslation. “If he is saying there is no progress, he is not telling the truth,” said Talat. “He should not take any offence but we achieved progress with his contributions. So he should at least respect that. Mr. Downer has also stated that there is progress. I don’t think Christofias denied progress. There is progress and he should be pleased with this too.”

In response to a question regarding the elections, President Talat stated that the Turkish Cypriot people will have a successful election despite problems in their democracy. He added that he has no special expectations from the elections but underlined that they are pursuing a Cyprus policy that is being accepted and supported by the world. He highlighted that the government, to be established following the elections should not overturn, harm or weaken this policy. President Talat said that the people will decide after all. Talat added that it would also be ethically wrong for the future government to intervene in the Cyprus problem.

In response to another question, President Talat stated that the Ergenekon investigation in Turkey is taking on a new dimension each passing day. “It may or may not have an effect on elections,” Talat said, adding that the Office of the Chief Public Prosecutor is legally pursuing the case.
