Soldiers held after Cyprus plane laser prank

Postby CBBB » Fri Apr 10, 2009 11:56 am

FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE 10.APR.09
Local police say they have detained four National Guard soldiers suspected of using pen-lasers at night to blind aircraft pilots over Larnaca airport.

The crew of an Aegean Airways plane about to land at Larnaca Airport on Tuesday reported they had been interfered with by a laser beam while approaching the runaway.

Larnaca police chief Angelos Karadjias said the arrests were made after a citizen's tip-off.

The four conscripts, aged 18 to 20, face reckless endangerment charges carrying a maximum two-year jail term or a euro 2,500 fine.

Karadjias said the suspects allegedly used commercially available, pen-sized lasers to target the cockpits of low-flying planes on approach to Larnaca.

Four separate incidents occurred over the last 18 days.

The Larnaca CID police department issued an appeal to people using laser not to interfere with planes approaching the airport.

A spokesman said such interference may lead to an air tragedy.

They must be severely punished , only a prison sentence will deter other reckless bastards from such dangerous actions.
A fine is NOT a deterrent if daddy has plenty of dosh. 3 Years minimum I say .

From todays Cyprus Mail:

Communication Ministry Permanent Secretary Makis Constantinides said yesterday it was an “extremely idiotic and dangerous habit” that endangered hundreds of passengers.

“It is not a joke, it is a crime. It is forbidden to disturb an aircraft while it is in flight and carries a sentence of life imprisonment,” he said.

Are you inferring that such dangerous acts are tolerated in Cyprus ?

Police helicopters in the UK have been having the same problems. Luckily most of the culprits are charged.
