Realism at last by a Greek Cypriot paper!

Postby MrH » Thu Apr 09, 2009 1:11 pm

.... Is the following article a WARNING for the Greek Cypriot Administered Republic of Cyprus? It's always been known, by some members of this forum, that the Greek Cypriot position is always the right one and the Turkish Cypriot have no choice but to join the GC administered ROC, otherwise the TRNC will eventually be dissolved and Turkey will lose its EU position as a candidate and will have to ultimate bow to GC-Threats. Well, Perhaps this article may shed some light on the matter which is currently in the Cyprus Mail?

Or will the GC-Hardliners win, again?

.........

Who do these populists think they’re fooling?

THE IRRESPONSIBLE populism of the Cyprus problem’s professional hardliners knows no bounds. Everything is possible for these demagogues, so long as the government subscribes to their simplistic views on world politics and follows a more assertive diplomatic policy.

Five years of the Papadopoulos presidency, during which the government’s assertive policies led nowhere but this has taught nothing to the demagogues, who now have the audacity to accuse President Christofias of ‘submissiveness’.

On a Monday night TV debate, a political columnist castigated the majority of the politicians because they agreed to a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation as a settlement. Such a system would never work, he argued, and the politicians should have asked the people before agreeing to a federation. It was not too late to put it to a referendum, he said.

Ironically, this was from a commentator who was lambasting the island’s populists and demanding more seriousness in political life. His message was quite clear – if we did not want a federation, all we had to do was tell the Turkish side that we wanted to negotiate a different system of government and our wish would be granted.

It is this naive thinking that has always plagued Cyprus politics. No thought is ever given to what a tiny country like Cyprus, with no military, financial or diplomatic muscle can achieve. In fact anyone who dares mention this unpalatable truth is dismissed as submissive and unpatriotic. The demagogues insist that by building up our defensive capability and pursuing an assertive diplomatic policy – constantly blocking EU negotiations with Turkey – we will secure the settlement we desire, which is laughable.

Yet we know that the obstruction tactics at the EU do not work – they led to the marginalisation of the Republic without any real benefits. The naive slogan about a ‘European solution’, peddled by the professional hardliners, was completely discredited as were the absurd boasts by a former foreign minister that he would defend the principles of the EU.

This is the type of simplistic nonsense which is served as political argument by the exponents of the hardline approach, who are always dreaming of putting Turkey in the dock – by filing recourses to the European Court of Human Rights and stepping up the enlightenment campaign.

Yet the truth is that the only peaceful way to re-unify the island is through the establishment of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation. The demagogues, who object to such a settlement should find the courage to tell us what they support instead. They should not be embarrassed to say that partition would be a better settlement than a federation. It is a perfectly legitimate proposition and much easier to implement than a federal settlement. But despite their brave rhetoric, they do not have the courage to say so in public, offering instead hollow promises and fairytale endings.

Firstly the Cyprus Mail is the biggest anti-gc newspaper around.
Secondly this "European Solution" they mock has been verified by Oli Rehn a few days ago when he ruled out permanent derogations.
Thirdly, how has blocking the EU path of Turkey been damaging to us? Cyprus is anything BUT sidelined at the moment in the EU.

Mr H, Cyprus Mail has been realistic about a solution ever since I've been reading it and thats about 6 years now. Unfortunately our more extreme forumers don't very much care for it.

Look DT, every country, especially in today's "small world", needs to establish some kind of middle ground, particularly with those that surround them (like Cyprus with Turkey). It's also common knowledge that Turkey is a very important, strategic partner for Europe, the Middle East, the U.S and the former (Turkic) ex-soviet states, where it would be futile for Cyprus to continue its aggressive stance towards clearly a country that could actually turn out to be an important trading partner one day (especially if Cyprus realises that Turkey will eventually become an EU member).

Cyprus is very much "Sidelined" DT, otherwise, why did President Christofias of the GC-ROC jump to Talat's Unification call as his first Presidential appointment? Why did he say that it was his duty to repair the damage done by former GC-ROC President Tassos Papadopoulos. The truth is, that President Christofias knows that he can not just reject Talat's unification call, delay the talks process or demand that Turkey first remove its so-called "Occupation Troops" before sitting around a table. Cyprus has exhausted all of its prior preconditions and time-wating tactics. He also knows that the EU are desperate to wrap up the Cyprus issue once and for all, and knows that the isolation of Northern Cyprus (based on humanitarian principals) is unsustainable if he were to ignore Talat's call. In other words, the current GC-ROC is not the END Product, it must be either merge or dissolve as part of a United Republic of Cyprus, making it pretty much expendable, or agree to the unthinkable for the Greek Cypriots - Partition.

Turkey is not an enemy of Greek Cyprus. This must now be realised by the Greek Cypriots. Perhaps some kind of consensus is now long overdue? Proceeding this, if Greek Cyprus continues to accuse Turkey of occupation of Northern Cyprus (when it's evident that they are there under the authorisation of the Turkish Cypriot people), take (property) cases against it to the ECHR, etc, etc, building up a pointless military defence programme against it, etc, etc, it will only, ultimately, become a laughing stock to its EU member partners - if not already. Therefore, one may ask- what is the only way out? Well, Greek Cyprus needs to understand what it is that is required of them - where we all know is to either find an amicable solution to the Cyprus problem under a two-state, bi-com, bi-zon Federation, or work side-by-side as two republic Cypriot states as similarly to what was agreed with by the Czech Rep'lic and Slovak Rep'lic state.

The hardliners in the RoCy are indeed causing problems that help perpetuate the current unsatisfactory status quo. However, as long as they hold the opininative "high ground" (with the not-so-subtle threats against the pragmatists), it will continue. Now, I'm not going to say "do what the Turkish side wants" because that also is wrong. But the hardline element is going to have to rethink things if they truly want a solution. Because the current status quo is no solution and their attitudes are only helping the hard-liners north of the Green Line.
