The numbers you presented are flaw in many ways...The numbers are based on immigrant parents coz if any of their offsprings have/had a mixed marriage, like my self, my kids are classified as australian...pure and simple...
Australia is a multucural nation due to the diversification of the populaton when today all these cultures are inter mixing big time...Australia as to what defines a country has not matured yet, we are a new country and a counry continualy evolving...
So when you have all these cultures coming together, it helps us in defining our unique ethnicity...an Australian...
Times have changed Paphiti, and without disrespect you might not see coming from a smaller city...In Melbourne and Sudney this is quite evident...
These statistics are from The Australian Buruea of Statistics nationwide census.
And as far as I recall, the question posed was
"how people identify themselves".So everyone is free to identify themselves however they wish. Your children could theoretically identify themselves as Australian, Greek, Cypriot or Ukranian.
From your report, done in 2006, estimated in 2008
There are now more unmarried women than married – 51.4% are now unmarried leading to a society of 'Freemales'
The children could be under age so they couldn't have decided but a single parent decided...
Over 40% of Australians now have at least one parent born overseas, with Africa being one of the fastest growing immigrant sources. Largely these are white immigrants from South Africa and the former Rhodesia.
This alone is shows a major trend into cross marriages...again the children could be too young and parents made the decision...Never the less a high number if all those ethnic communities inter marry...This will definetely shape what constitues an Australian...
So you have your nation and your ethnicity...
Something similar to what Cyprus went through from 2000-3000 years ago...
The difference is while we embrace these trends in Australia, in Cyprus they teach history...
Well parents could make the decision of minors. We all know this. Nothing unusual Boom.
We also understand the concept of mix marriages which is why many people could identify themselves as half English and Half Greek for example.
There is no such thing as a Genetic pure English, Greek or Turkish bloodline. What segregates people into ethnicities are things such as
language, culture, custom and religion.
The census was done by asking people to group themselves accordingly. But you say that the statistics are incorrect. Well I disagree, because if a Half Greek classified themselves as Greek, then they are Greek. If they classified themselves as English, then they are English. If they classified themselves as Australian, then they are Australian.
The question did not ask us what our nationality is. Because it is naturally Australian. It asked what ethnic group you consider yourself to be.
Again, The Australian Bureau of Statistics does understand the fundamental difference between
Nationality and
Ethnicity.
