The living Cypriot culture

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Zeno - Because back when he was born, Cyprus was regarded as a Greek island, and Zeno was born in Cyprus. Secondly, Zeno was taught Greek philosophy in Athens. So it seems that this is where the assumption lies. He was culturally, if not ethnically, Greek.

Aphrodite - The Cypriot religion was the Greek religion. So she was a Cypriot and Greek goddess. It was the same thing.

See, you seem to assume that the Cypriots and the rest of the Greeks are and always were separate, this is why your conclusions are slightly wide of the mark.

Very good !!
Greeks were considered those people that were educated in the Greek culture so it is not illogical to consider Zeno to be Greek after all. In addition it is not certain that he was of Phoenician extraction.

You are a mere Cypriot National of English Ethnicity as opposed to Hellenic Ethnicity.

Don't make me post the proof you provided us on other less lively forums...

Go on mate put up or shut up. My very first post on this forum , you can find it , stated that I was a Greek Cypriot . English blood is flowing in my children's and grandchildren's veins as well as G/C blood.
All on this forum know me as a Cypriot above all else , one who loves every inch of this island and considers all Cypriots as his people, you on the other hand because you were born out of Cyprus have chosen to consider the Greeks as his people , you are welcome to them mate but don't ask me or others to abandon our natural motherland and embrace a foreign country .
It is precisely as a result of rejecting the Cypriot ethnicity that we have occupying troops on our island.

Fair enough...

As I've already explained, the cult of Aphrodite was actually brought to Cyprus by the Phoenicians; the Cypriots and then the wider ancient Hellenic world adopted her. She became Greek, she is originally Phoenician but she is above all, in my mind - and as the goddess of love, a Cypriot. And it's that which I'm most proud of and inspired by.

And although it's true of course that Zeno was educated in Athens, I believe Stoicism is a very Cypriot philosophy. There's no doubt his Phoenician ancestry influenced his thinking. (Indeed he was known in Athens as 'The Phoenician'). I don't doubt that the fact that he was born and raised in Cyprus played a pivotal role in his philsophy. And it's a philosophy I see reflected in the thinking of many elderly UK Cypriots I know (who fled the island to escape economic hardship and the troubles). Again, it's that which I'm most proud of.

But aside from the above, how about my third cheesy example?

Oh please. Grab your Cypriometer and shove it up your arse. Then pull it out and tell me once more how much of a Cypriot you are....

Or you can start another poll asking forumers of the immense magnitude of your pseudo Cypriotness....Image

Come on , Paphiti don't be such a hot-head. We are having an interesting philosophical debate here.

Zeno wouldn't have stormed off in a huff if some clever-dick Athenian had questioned his logic. He'd have stood his ground, argued his point, honed his thinking... until he was respected as one of them... even though he was a dark Cypriot-Phoenician!

If Aphrodite is Greek then, by your logic, was Jesus too? After all, the gospels were written in koine, Jesus is a Greek name and Palestine, like Cyprus, was occupied by Alexander and then the Romans.

And the Greeks and Romans adopted the Jewish-founded Jesus church as their own, as they did the originally Semitic Aphrodite cult years earlier.

There is more Cypriotness in my right bullock than there is in your entire Cypriot "pretend" body , you aspire to be a Greek because you have no pride in Cypriotness so shove your Greekness up your foreign arse , preferably don't ever bring it to Cyprus there are plenty arseholes here already without another one to join them.
Listen mate , we are Cypriots like it or not you are not !!

Jesus did not write the Gospels. Jesus didn't speak Greek as far as we know. Jesus never heard the name Jesus, and whilst Palestine was occupied by the Greeks, it never had thousands of years of Greek culture like Cyprus. So very different circumstances. Aphrodite as far as we know was never real, however, it is likely that Jesus (a Jew) did exist.

I think the Cypriot might soon discover if he already hasn't that Paphiti is a first class bloody pretender of a Cypriot in reality he is no more a Cypriot than Prince Philip !! Connected to Cyprus yes , but a Cypriot , no way !
He is used to losing arguments and reverting to what he does best , throw insults , the Plonker !!

Christ, it's like fighting the Medusa! Chop one head off and another snake appears to snap at you.

Let's not get into a debate as to whether Yeshu (Greek: Isus) or Astarte (Greek: Aphrodite) were ever real personages, as we'd open up a can of worms to go with all the snakes.

Yeshu didn't write the gospels and nor did Astarte write about the shenanigans on Mount Olympus. Neither Yeshu or Astarte spoke Greek. Neither Yeshu or Astarte would have heard their Greek names. The only difference is the degree of Hellenic influence between Cyprus and Palestine, and I concede, of course, that this influence was greater on Cyprus.

However, the fact remains that neither mythology is actually Greek in origin.

But if you choose to make a case for one, you could make a case for the other. And you could, like that dad on "My Big, Fat Greek Wedding" make a case for everything being Greek, or invented by Greeks. Including hallumin.

I've noticed you focus on minutiae Simon, rather than looking at the overall thrust of the argument. Time will tell whether we can make a philosopher out of you.
