Before that it was Cypriots (ie Greek speaking population) and Turks (ie "turkish cypriots")
In 1931 they decided that everyone is a "cypriot" and the whole world was fucked... ie they created a new identity for you lot in order to create tensions
Basically, all references prior to 1931 have listed the Turks of Cyprus as the settlers of the Ottoman occupation. They were never considered Cypriots. Cypriots were always Greeks + Armenians, Maronites, Latins and many many years ago there were Jews as well.
The ONLY major problem with Greece was having the Brits as allies. The Brits never liked the Greeks even if they helped them a bit in 1821... The Brits received far more help from Greece than the other way round.
