I believe the Pontians had the fighting spirit to become independent but not the geography, The Asia Minor Greeks had no fighting spirit nor geography, The Cypriots had the best geography for maintaining and protecting independence. Unfortunately the disgusting majority of leftist Arabs(or NeoCypriots) signing songs of the Workingmen's Internationale doomed the few fierce Greek Cypriots to lack proper military equipment, preparedness, diplomatic support(from Athens and Washington) and numbers to ever succeeded the Turkish onslaught.
