I see your points nikephoros, i think that aspect of the cypriot character comes from being taken over by so many different invaders over the years not unlike all the other islands in the med. you can see it in cypriot dialect and sayings one that comes to mind is .." shipse tin kele sou jai siopa" evident of wait this invader out they will ultimately leave just preserve your ass or arse or kolo... the movie "catch 22" highlights this when the italian old man is talking to his new conquerer the american who is played by a naive 18 year old.
