I must admit that I have never heard of Sevan Nişanyan before, but he seems to be quite a colourful character if the following article is anything to go by:

I discovered in another source that when he was in prison, depite being an Armenian Christian, his knowledge of Arabic and the Quran is so good that he ended up teaching a Quran course to other inmates, earning him the nickname of "gavur hoca"!

In that expression (gavur hoca) I feel there is a sense of 'respect' in spite of the use of the word 'Gav--'.
