Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, who arrived in İstanbul on Sunday evening for an intergovernmental bilateral summit with Turkey, defended Turkey’s ambitions to join the EU, saying that the door to membership must remain “open” for Ankara as long as it adheres to the requirements set by the bloc’s 27 member nations.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said he also backed Obama’s support for EU membership for Turkey, telling reporters he was confident that current obstacles holding back Ankara’s talks with Brussels could be solved.

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, who accompanied Berlusconi during the summit, told reporters that Sarkozy’s outright objection to Obama’s remarks stemmed from concerns related to “domestic policy.”

Bottom line is you're not getting in without convincing us first.

We are not getting one of the options without your cooperation. There will be plenty of others to choose from.

You people havent a clue. Obama has been elected and supported overwhelmingly by the Greek American community. Even in Chicago where he first ran for Senate and where there is a large Greek American community....he received that Senate seat with the help of the Greek American community in Chicago. This is simply a fact and nothing you people say can change this fact.

Obama may promise as much as he likes to Turkey. He was elected to represent the people of the United States so he is looking out for his people's interest. If conditions change and if our side gets its act together, then all the Turkish rewards you think are coming your way may not be implemented. Definitely Keep that in mind. International relations work in a funny way.

Anyway, monitoring other fora, doesn't make-up for lacking accurate information on your subjects .... unless it's a virtual-thesis.

As you're not the person grading my thesis, Oracle, your opinion is definitely not worth a counterfeit loonie. In any case, sampling opinions from various forums does provide an interesting picture of interactions between the compromisers and hardliners on this issue.

Not the exacting high standards we are used to in the UK, I must say

It's like doing a thesis on Literature, and compiling a bunch of isolated, torn out pages from various books, without any idea on the author, title, story; and then trying to carry out a comprehensive criticism based on these scraps ..... Meaningless IMHO!

Anyway, good luck! ... I am sure someone out there would see nothing wrong with that

My thesis is about the Cyprus Problem, containing the geoplititical realities of Cyprus and possible solution scenarios, PLUS the various opinions expressed by the opposing parties who would have the most to lose/gain from any scenario: the average person. As I'm based in Canada - a tad far from Cyprus - the forums are my best insight for the latter part of the thesis. FYI, my professor prefers that forum opinions be sought. Especially here, where people don't tend to hold back... like you, Oracle...

Considering that a lot of the debaters here are either trying hard to maintain their sides official line on arguments and doing a poor job...or the other side by claiming points their own side would find ridiulous....good luck.

WHat goes on in this forum is a mixture of
- people listening to the news and filtering out what they understood, -things taught at home/school,
- experiences of life (a Gc who lived through the invasion will treat insan's insane claim that there was NO invasion differently than other GC's.),
- other members opinons which they have adopted,
- postitions easy to defend and lastly
- personal opinion.

I'm well aware of what goes on here, DT. And regardless of what you or Oracle may think, this forum is giving me valuable data. It shows a glimpse of how polarizing the issue is, and how even compromisers are either shunned or ridiculed in such an environment. Research covers a large spectrum of resources. This forum is part of my spectrum and my observations here are giving me a lot to write about...
