1. The Brit has only been charged at this stage. Innocent until proven guilty? Perhaps you may wish to amend the title of this thread to include the word 'allegedly'

2. You use the word 'trees'. As far I can see there was only 1 tree destroyed.

If you care to look at the article, he was walking off with the "evidence" of one tree, but he had chopped down branches of some others; ergo 'trees' .... Those are both offences in the UK, for trees with preservation orders.

I care less for his "guilt" or "innocence" and more about his (undenied?) capitalisation on the state of affairs.

A case of one law at home, and sod the natives, methinks!

Still not been proven though....................

You missed this:

[...] admitted he had cut down the oak-tree in order to sell the wood, saying “I made a mistake.”

....Happy to capitalise, at the least, wouldn't you say?

Admitted to whom?

Hhhmmm .... why are you "protecting" this man? :?

Was it you?

... or can Brits do no wrong? ... especially if it's a GC's word against a Brit's word?

Not protecting anyone. If he's guilty, then I hope that the Cypriot court deals with him as appropriate. His nationality has nothing to do with it.

But at the moment his guilt is unproven.

Hopefully kurie Constantinou's complaint will have a positive outcome - so beware!

All too often I see people out and about hacking away at trees with their chainsaws gathering in their winter firewood! You cannot tell me that they all steer clear of the protected species either! :(

Once killed they are forever gone ... sometimes hundreds of years ... snuffed in a moment.

I speak as one who witnessed the unproven, but quite obviously deliberate, killing of an 150 year old Tulip tree with a preservation order (in UK) ... but "ignored" by the house-owner who dug deep for a garage until the tree's roots were severed, enough, that the poor thing died a slow lingering death over the space of a year. The owner got away Scot free because, I guess, trees can't speak for themselves, nor do they show the signs of abuse until it is way too late!

As one who comes from Stroumbi The Great may I express my disdain at actions carried out by any resident of the village that have as a result the destruction of a tree and more so an oak tree that is protected by law.
The fact that the alleged offender is an Englishman is utterly irrelevant.
The English that moved to Stroumbi the Great some years back brought with them many benefits not least the tremendous increase of property and land , an increase that has benefited most if not all villages including my own immediate family. Their contribution to animal welfare has been marvelous , their natural love of the environment has greatly enhanced the general look of the village and encouraged the villagers to contribute towards making the village a well ordered , clean and "modern".
To the best of my knowledge the villagers enjoy an excellent relationship with the Brits , perhaps one reason the son of the Mouxtari requested the Police take no action. The fact that one tree has been cut down it does not alter the excellent rapport that exists between the locals and the Brits .

Surely a bit of 'exageration' is normal for Cypriots.

But Oracle telling 'porkies'. Now that is something worth investigating.

On a serious note, cutting down trees is akin to murder.IMO. It should be taken as a serious issue. Its bad enough in the north, but the RoC I am sure will take a dimm view of this.

I wonder why she doesn't talk about destroyed olive trees and carob trees which were all destroyed by Greek Cypriot constructors around paphos villages ........ she never talks about destroyed vineyards around Paphos villages .... when someone cares about the trees or environment must be talk ,and protest whats going on at elsewhere just pointing out about some individuals does not make any sense at all ..... something else lies under this .....

In both side of the the island destroying trees and environment goes on .

Law does not apply only for English man ....applies for everybody .It is illegal to cut the trees without getting permission from the goverment even if the tree is in your house ... you need permission ... how those contactors are doing ...they are doing ... in both side of the island laws are funny .... Laws followers are does not care at all .
