Cyprus marked the first anniversary of the opening of the Lokmaci Gate for mutual crossings today.
A year ago, the move was perceived as a leading confidence-building measure by the international community which raised further hopes for the peaceful reunification of Cyprus in a near future.
Many said the opening of the Lokmaci Gate was a symbol of reunification.
On the first anniversary, a message issued on behalf of the EU Commission congratulated the two leaders in Cyprus for their collaboration for the opening of crossings.
The EU will make available substantial funding through the UN for further safety and rehabilitation works at the Lokmaci crossing point, the message said.
The Commission encouraged the two sides to implement further confidence-building measures as earlier agreed by Mehmet Ali Talat and the Demetris Christofias.
It also reiterated its support to full-fledged peace negotiations which are being maintained with the aim of bringing an end to the Cyprus problem.
