France, which had thus far resisted Turkey’s participation in the European Gendarmerie Force (EGF), an initiative comprising six European Union member states -- France, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania and Spain -- has finally given up its objection, with French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner recently sending a letter to his Turkish counterpart, Ali Babacan.France's move on the EGF issue comes only days ahead of an April 3-4 NATO summit co-hosted by France and Germany, at which US President Barack Obama will try to line up more allied manpower and money to fight the Taliban insurgency.
