Cheapest way to get large parcel from UK to Cyprus

Postby eracles » Fri Apr 03, 2009 12:54 am

Hi I was in Cyprus last week, went to mothercare in limassol to get a car seat for the baby- the one I wanted was 245 euros (£223 Sterling).
I can get the same seat for £99 in the UK but how do I get it over to Cyprus?

Best quote I've had so far is £125 or so which obviously doesn't help!

Does anyone know if I can take the car seat on the plane with me next time I visit, fully packaged in the box (45*49*72cm, 9kg)? I usually fly with monarch who allow an extra 10kg for baby.

Alternatively, any other ideas? Would leave to keep the cost under £40 but maybe not realistic.

Thanks for any help. The parcel would be going to Limassol area.

We took three sunbeds (folded up) to Greece on Olympic airways a while back, weighing about 5Kg each. Altogether, we were about 20Kg over (for 3 of us) and they just let us through with no extra to pay.

Yet others have been stung for a mere few kilos and no extra real bulk .... So it probably depends on the airline.

Why don't you phone Monarch beforehand, and tell them it's a car seat for a baby, and you don't trust the car hire company to provide one, and appeal to their civic sense of duty and get a commitment from them that they'll handle it ....

BTW .... weren't the RoC supplying, free, baby car seats in some recent scheme :? ... Check the Cyprus Mail ....

Here it is .... maybe you can apply for one of these, if you qualify: ... although unlikely as you say you have a baby :?

(Na sou zisi ... btw :D )

Time to buckle up the children
By Alexia Saoulli
(archive article - Sunday, March 15, 2009)

Over 6,000 child car seats will be distributed to children in pre-primary school as part of government road safety efforts.

The announcement was made by Communication Minister Nicos Nicolaides following the first leg of the 2009 European Road Safety Charter tour in Nicosia.

Nicolaides said the Ministry had agreed to purchase 6,200 new car seats which would be distributed to parents so that they could transport their children around safely. The Ministry also hopes the initiative will instil better road safety consciousness and increase public awareness about the importance of road safety measures.

The European Road Safety Charter is part of the Road Safety Action Plan, launched four years ago by the European Commission with the ambitious goal of contributing to halving the number of deaths on European roads by 2010. The charter involves companies, public authorities and civil society and provides a unique opportunity to take direct and decisive action to reduce road fatalities, assess results and share ideas and successful measures.

There are currently 1,300 European Road Safety Charter signatories across Europe, with 29 in Cyprus including among others CyBC, CYTA, the University of Cyprus, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, the Cyprus Automobile Association, the Cyprus Ports Authority, the Electricity Authority and BP Eastern Mediterranean Ltd, C.A. Papaellinas and Co Ltd and McDonald’s Cyprus (Family Restaurants Andreou Co. Ltd).

According to www.childseats.org.uk, in a crash at just 50 km/h “an unrestrained child would be thrown forward with a force 30 to 60 times their body weight”.

“They would be thrown about inside the vehicle, injuring themselves and quite possibly seriously injuring or even killing other people inside the vehicle. They are also likely to be ejected from the car through one of the windows.

It is not safe to hold a child on your lap. In a crash, the child could be crushed between your body and part of the car’s interior. Even if you are using a seat belt, the child would be torn from your arms – you would not be able to hold onto them, no matter how hard you try.

“It is also dangerous to put a seat belt around yourself and a child (or around two children).

“The safest way for children to travel in cars is in a child seat that is suitable for their weight and size.”

If you take it out of the box, you can take it through for no extra charge the same as you can a pushchair :)
