Cypriots have always been Greek...

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Cypriots have always been Greek...

Postby Paphitis » Wed Apr 01, 2009 5:05 am

Even back in 1821, when Greeks were under Ottoman rule for about 400 years and the Greek nation did not exist, Cypriots still deemed themselves to be Greek or Hellenes...

Cyprus: from 1821 Greek War of Liberation to mid-19th century
The gradual and promising developments were reversed in 1821. In 1818 Archbishop Kyprianos became a member of the Philike Hetaireia, a secret organization that planned to establish an independent Greek state out of the Ottoman Empire. Kyprianos was fully aware of Cyprus’ isolated position and its resident Turkish garrison, and only felt able to promise financial and material support.

In 1821 revolts broke out all over the Greek-speaking provinces of the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish governor of Cyprus, having previously requested reinforcements from Syria, received permission from the Sultan to launch campaign of crackdown. The archbishop and other prominent members of the secret organisation were hanged on grounds of treachery. The crackdown effectively destroyed the Greek Cypriots chance of joining the Greek rebellion. It also indelibly stamped Greek Cypriots with a loathing of the Ottoman administration and a desire for Enosis, or union with the independent Greece that was born of this traumatic period.

The flag shown above was used in the region of Kokkinochoria during the independence war of 1821. People in Cyprus then fought for enosis (Union) with Greece.

The Greek letter Π placed in the middle of the flag represents the village of Paralimni, where soldiers were recruited and organized. The other villages in the region of Kokkinochoria are Protaras, Derynia, Agia Napa, Frenaros, Sotira, Liopetri, Avgorou and Xylofagoy.

A surviving flag from the 1821 war is shown at the Museum of National History in Athens. The flag, is white with a blue Greek cross in the middle and the words: "SHMEA ELLHNHKI PATRIS - KYPROU", which literally translates into: "Flag of The Greek land of Cyprus".

The above flag was going to be the Cypriot Revolutionary Flag against Ottoman rule, but when 3 Cypriot Bishops were beheaded by the Ottomans, Cypriots then decided it was all too hard and immediately put on their Vrakaes and headed for the nearest Ottoman Kafeneio to sip Geek or was it Ottoman coffee....

Did the Greek also decide it was all too hard back in 1821? They certainly did not. There persisted with their struggle against all odds whilst Cypriots were just too scared.

The consequences of our inaction are evident to this day. :(

May the memory of EOKA be eternal, for they are the one's that paid the eternal price by trying to free our shackles of slavery which clearly should have been done way back in 1821....

Paphitis,

Your flag and seal is going to be like waving a red flag to a bull to some members of this forum...

Once more Paphiti...read up on this. It wasn't 3 bishops that were beheaded but 486 people that were leaders in the GC community that were hung. Amongst them were 3 bishops.

I knew this also DT.

But the 486 that were hanged were random executions to strike fear into the Cypriot people. And it worked. But why didn't the Greeks also succumb to similar torment and persecution?

The way I see it, if 300 Cypriots were able to stand up against the British Empire on this day in 1955, then why did we not do the same against a bunch of Ottoman Killintziroi?

And Cypriots, whose nation did not exist either, deemed themselves to be something that was yet to be born and belong to someone else 300 miles away?

Fascinating stuff... almost a mythology!

A correction :the 486 executed Greek people were not chosen in random but rather they were the civic and religious leaders in their corresponding communities.
Some Greek leaders managed to escape while some others had the benefit to be citizens of other countries or being under their protection.

Cypriots were terrorised by the Ottomans, we have ample evidence. Obviously it was effective in subjugating uprisings. Gawd knows how much more they did, than we are left with in our records!

But let's not underestimate the impact being a British colony had upon Cyprus.

By the 50's Cyprus not only had (1) the might of the British Empire still ruthlessly clinging on to Cyprus; but also (2) GB was joined by one of the most evil "nations" to be allowed to formulate in our neighborhood, and Turkey having sunk its teeth into Cyprus was never going to let go.

Since Greece did not manage to destroy Turkey (what does not kill you makes you stronger), it grew and unleashed its monstrous strength upon our poor Island, and saps us (and the EU) to this day.

So how is the EU going to regain its territory?

Cyprus belongs to Cypriots not the EU.

"So how is the EU going to regain its territory?"

Simple- by growing a pair of balls. When the EU leaders stop behaving like pimps and act like men then many things will be put right, one of them being Cyprus. But don't hold your breath.
