Simon wrote:GR seems to think that because there was life on Cyprus before the Greeks arrived, this means that Cypriots are not Greek today. What kind of ridiculous logic is that? In that case the people of Crete are not Greeks, as Crete had a great civilisation before the Greeks. You can say the same of many regions around the world. The Greeks colonised many areas of Cyprus and founded numerous settlements. The pre-existing Cypriots were assimilated. Your arguments just make no sense GR :?

That Greeks have pinched Cypriot culture & civilization goes without saying but the other way round? I don't think so...

What could the Cypriots possibly have benefited from the illiterate refugee Mycenaeans fleeing the Dorian invasions?

What civilisation and culture did the Greeks pinch?

You mean the Cypriot script that the Cypriots pinched from the Minoans?

Cyprus became an extension of Greek civilisation, so neither side "pinched" anything.

THE GREEK ALPHABET IS BASED ON THE PHOENICIAN, AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CYPRIOT SCRIPT
The Greek alphabet is descended from the Phoenician alphabet, and is not related to Linear B or the Cypriot syllabary, earlier writing systems for Greek.
